Essential Pressure Cooking Pointers

For those new to the world of pressure cooking, a few basic tips can make your experience smoother and more enjoyable. These guidelines will help you master your appliance and expand your repertoire of delicious, one-pot meals:

  • Stay Updated: Regularly visit reliable sources for new Instant Pot recipes. Many creators frequently add fresh and exciting dishes, so bookmarking a dedicated recipe page can keep you inspired and informed.
  • Master Cooking Times: A comprehensive Instant Pot cooking times cheat sheet is an invaluable resource. This guide helps you accurately determine how long various ingredients—from meats and vegetables to beans—need to cook in your pressure cooker for optimal results. It eliminates guesswork and ensures consistent perfection.
  • Invest in a Quality Pot Liner: To minimize sticking and simplify cleanup, we highly recommend a high-quality non-stick pot liner. While understanding how to deglaze your pressure cooker after sautéing is an important skill, a good liner significantly reduces the chances of food sticking, making the entire cooking process more pleasant.

For context, all our recipe creations are developed using a 6-quart pressure cooker, a versatile size suitable for most households.

Optimizing Your Artichoke Pressure Cooking Experience

While many Instant Pot accessories are available, only a few are truly essential and enhance your cooking experience significantly. For steaming artichokes, a quality steamer basket with feet and an extendable handle is a game-changer. I’ve experimented with various Instant Pot vegetable steamer baskets, but the long handle on certain models makes it incredibly easy to lift the hot artichokes out of the pot without burning your fingers. Some even feature a middle hook option for added convenience and safety. Additionally, investing in a pair of Instant Pot mini mitts provides the perfect grip and protection when handling hot accessories inside your pressure cooker.

The Perfect Pressure Cooking Time for Artichokes

One of the most appealing aspects of cooking with an Instant Pot is the dramatic reduction in cooking time, especially for foods like artichokes. What typically requires a solid 30 minutes or more on the stovetop can be achieved in just 12 minutes of active pressure cooking, plus an additional 7-8 minutes for the pot to come to pressure. This means you can have three perfectly cooked, fork-tender artichokes ready in less than 20 minutes from start to finish!

The ideal cooking time for artichokes often comes down to personal preference for tenderness. However, for most medium to large artichokes, 12 minutes at high pressure yields a wonderfully tender result, allowing you to easily scrape the “meat” off the leaves. This timing also ensures the artichoke heart remains slightly firm, never mushy, providing a satisfying texture that perfectly complements the creamy dip.

Selecting and Preparing Artichokes for Pressure Cooking

When choosing artichokes, medium sizes are generally recommended for pressure cooking. Larger artichokes can be more challenging to fit into the steamer basket and may require an increase in cooking time by a few minutes. Additionally, exceptionally large artichokes sometimes have a slightly less intense flavor in the edible meat you scrape from the leaves. Opting for organic artichokes whenever possible is always a great choice for the freshest taste and peace of mind. Can You Enjoy Artichokes Daily? Explore Their Health Benefits!

Absolutely! Artichokes are a nutritional powerhouse that can be enjoyed regularly as part of a healthy diet. They are rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals, offering a plethora of health advantages. Studies have shown that consuming artichokes can significantly improve various digestive health disorders, aid in lowering blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and even contribute to the prevention of heart disease. Furthermore, they are known for their liver-protective properties, making them a fantastic addition to your daily intake. So, feel free to indulge in these incredible vegetables!

Fresh vs. Canned Artichokes: Nutritional Value

Both fresh and canned artichokes offer valuable dietary fiber, magnesium, and other essential minerals. However, there are some distinctions to consider. Canned artichokes typically contain more calories due to the brines and oils used in preservation. More importantly, they often include preserving agents that, while safe, are not as beneficial as consuming fresh artichokes. Fresh artichokes, when properly stored in your refrigerator, can last for approximately two weeks, allowing you to enjoy their natural goodness. Therefore, when you spot fresh artichokes on sale, it’s an excellent opportunity to stock up and savor them!

For pressure cooking, you will need a trivet or, as previously mentioned, a vegetable steamer with an extendable handle to facilitate easy removal of the cooked artichokes.

How to Steam Artichokes in the Instant Pot: Step-by-Step Guide

Achieving perfectly steamed artichokes in your Instant Pot is incredibly straightforward. Follow these simple steps for tender, delicious results every time:

  • Preparation is Key: Begin by prepping your artichokes. Use a sharp knife to cut off the pointy tops of the artichokes, creating a flat surface on top. Trim the bottom stems flat as well, ensuring they sit steadily in your vegetable steamer basket. For extra tenderness and flavor infusion, gently pull back the outer leaves slightly before cooking.
  • Add Water: Pour 1.5 cups of water into the inner pot of your Instant Pot or pressure cooker. This water creates the necessary steam for cooking.
  • Set Up Steamer Basket: If using a vegetable steamer basket, unfold its legs and carefully lower it into the Instant Pot, ensuring it sits above the water level.
  • Load Artichokes: Place 2-3 prepared artichokes into the steamer basket. Avoid overcrowding the basket, as ample space between them allows the steam to circulate effectively, ensuring even cooking and tenderness.
  • Season Lightly: Briefly open the leaves of each artichoke and sprinkle a little salt inside and over them. This simple seasoning enhances their natural flavor.
  • Pressure Cook: Secure the lid on your Instant Pot and ensure the steam release valve is set to the “Sealing” position. Select the “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” setting and set the cooking time to 12 minutes on high pressure.
  • Release Pressure: Once the cooking cycle is complete, allow the steam to naturally release for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, carefully move the steam release valve to the “Venting” position for a quick release of any remaining pressure. Once the float valve drops, you can safely lift the lid.
  • Check for Tenderness: Test an artichoke by gently pulling off an outer leaf. If it comes away easily and the base of the leaf is tender enough to scrape off the flesh with your teeth, they are ready. If you prefer them even softer, you can secure the lid again and pressure cook for an additional 2 minutes, then check once more.
  • Serve: Carefully remove the artichokes from the pot using the steamer basket handle or tongs. Sprinkle the tops with a bit more sea salt and a generous amount of shredded Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately with our creamy dill dipping sauce on the side and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions About Cooking Artichokes

Should you cut artichokes in half before steaming?

While it’s not strictly necessary, cutting artichokes in half before steaming can offer a few advantages. Some people choose to do this to ensure that the artichoke heart and the flesh of all the leaves become exceptionally tender. Additionally, halving the artichoke can slightly reduce the cooking time because the steam can penetrate the center more easily and thoroughly.

How does pressure cooking compare to stovetop steaming?

Pressure cooking significantly reduces the time required to steam artichokes. A stovetop method typically takes 30-45 minutes, whereas an Instant Pot or Ninja Foodi can cook them to perfection in just 12 minutes of active cooking time, plus the time it takes to build pressure. This makes pressure cooking a much faster and more energy-efficient option for preparing this delightful vegetable.

Cooking Artichoke Hearts in the Instant Pot

You can certainly cook fresh artichoke hearts in the Instant Pot, and they would typically be ready in about 4 minutes on high pressure. However, artichoke hearts are more commonly found canned or jarred, and these are usually pre-cooked and tender. In such cases, you would simply need to warm them through. This can be achieved using the “0-minute” pressure cook setting in a steamer basket, which effectively uses the residual heat and steam to gently warm them without overcooking.

For an alternative and utterly delicious method, if you own a Ninja Foodi, you can make crispy air fryer artichoke hearts. Lightly breaded and air-fried, these turn into incredibly satisfying, bite-sized morsels that everyone will love!

Prep: 10 mins
Cook: 12 mins
Total: 18 mins
Servings: 3

Equipment

  • 1 pressure cooker
  • 1 steamer basket

Ingredients

  • 3 medium artichokes, leaves gently pulled back to separate
  • 1.5 cups water

Artichoke Dip

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 3 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp garlic, minced (jarred is fine)
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp dill (dried in a jar, or fresh)
  • 2 tbsp parmesan cheese, grated/shredded

Instructions

  1. Cut the tops off your artichokes so the pointy ends are removed and the top of the artichoke is flat (as seen in the top picture). Also, cut off the bottom stems so they sit flat in your vegetable basket.
  2. Pour 1.5 cups of water inside your Instant Pot.
  3. Open your vegetable steamer, pull down the little legs on the bottom of the steamer, and lower it down into your pot.
  4. Place 2-3 artichokes in the vegetable steamer. (Do not overcrowd, or they won’t steam to tender perfection without some room between them).
  5. Gently open the leaves slightly and sprinkle with some salt.
  6. Close the lid and set your Instant Pot to Manual (or Pressure Cook) on high pressure for 12 minutes. Ensure the steam valve is sealed.
  7. When done, allow the steam to naturally release for 5 minutes, then carefully release the remaining pressure. Once the float valve drops, carefully lift the lid off.
  8. Sprinkle the top of the cooked artichokes with a bit more sea salt and shredded parmesan cheese.
  9. In a separate bowl, mix all the ingredients listed for the dipping sauce until well combined, and serve on the side as the perfect artichoke dip!
