Having explored various methods for preparing ham, I’ve found that this Crockpot approach requires surprisingly little preparation and consistently yields outstanding results. It has quickly become a beloved addition to our collection of easy Crockpot recipes, establishing itself as our preferred high-protein dinner solution for festive gatherings, especially during Christmas.

Effortless Sweet Pineapple Crockpot Ham: Your Ultimate Holiday Meal Solution

Ham serves as an excellent choice for any holiday dinner due to its many advantages. Not only is it packed with protein and often quite affordable, but a single ham can also provide multiple meals. For a family of five, it easily covers our main dinner and leaves plenty for creative leftover ham recipes, essentially giving us two meals from one preparation. Typically, hams purchased at grocery stores are half hams and come pre-sliced, but for this recipe, we’re exploring an alternative.

Having recently moved to Idaho, we’ve embraced the local tradition of purchasing meat directly from nearby farms. This year, we acquired an entire pig, which included quarter hams that came unsliced. For best results, particularly with an unsliced ham, I highly recommend thinly slicing it yourself before or after cooking, similar to a spiral sliced ham. This ensures that the glaze penetrates every layer and heats thoroughly throughout. I adopted this technique in subsequent attempts, and it made a significant difference in both flavor absorption and even heating.

Mastering the Art of Slow Cooking a Precooked Ham

While smoking a cooked ham remains a personal favorite for its distinctive smoky flavor, slow cooking offers an equally delicious alternative, especially if a smoker isn’t an option. The slow cooker method allows you to infuse the ham with many of the same rich, savory-sweet flavors. Before you begin, assess the size of your ham. If your piece is too large for your slow cooker, you might need to trim it slightly to ensure a snug fit. During one preparation, I removed a small section from the end of my ham, which I then thinly sliced and saved for delicious lunchmeat later. Beyond fitting the ham, the process is straightforward: simply add a bit of liquid for steaming and then apply your desired glaze for that perfect finish.

Expert Tips for a Perfectly Moist and Flavorful Slow Cooker Ham

Achieving a truly succulent ham in your Crockpot is simple with a few key techniques. Basting is paramount: if possible, baste the ham once or twice throughout the cooking process. This practice involves spooning the delicious pineapple juices from the bottom of the slow cooker over the ham, which helps to keep the meat incredibly moist and infuse it with even more flavor, creating an irresistibly juicy final product. Use a small measuring cup for easy scooping and pouring.

When selecting your ham, consider opting for an uncut holiday ham if you anticipate having leftovers. An uncut ham tends to retain its moisture and texture better when stored, ensuring that your subsequent meals are just as enjoyable as the first. Once the ham is fully cooked, only slice the portions you intend to eat immediately, preserving the rest of the ham’s integrity for later enjoyment. This minimizes exposure to air, which can dry out the meat.

Key Ingredients for Your Delicious Pineapple Ham

The transformation of your ham from a simple cut of meat into a delectable feast is largely due to these essential ingredients and the slow cooking process. The image above shows our ham right after basting, and the next photo reveals it once the lid was removed after cooking, showcasing the remarkable moisture on the outside—which, in my opinion, is always the best part!

  • Slow Cooker: An 8-quart slow cooker provides ample space for most hams.
  • Ham: We used a quarter ham, bone-in and fully cooked (smoked ham).
    • A typical half ham may be too large to fit comfortably in many slow cookers.
    • Our ham was not spiral cut, which requires a slightly longer cooking time to heat through.
    • If you are using a spiral ham, the cook time will likely be less as it’s designed for quicker heating and glaze penetration.
  • Brown Sugar: This is the foundation of our sweet, caramelized glaze, providing a rich, molasses-like flavor.
  • Canned Pineapple: Opt for pineapple slices, chunks, or tidbits in juice. The juice is crucial for the glaze, and the fruit adds a burst of tangy sweetness and tender texture to the ham.
  • Honey: A touch of honey enhances the sweetness and creates a beautiful, sticky glaze.
  • Whole Cloves (Optional): These aromatic spices can be pushed into the ham before cooking to infuse it with a warm, festive fragrance and flavor. They are purely optional, but highly recommended for traditional holiday ham.

Should pineapple not be to your taste, you have the flexibility to craft your own unique ham glaze. A wonderful alternative uses orange juice as a base, offering a delightful citrusy sweetness that complements the ham beautifully. Once your slow cooker ham is perfectly cooked, you can baste it one last time, then slice and serve immediately. Alternatively, if you prefer a thicker, more luxurious sauce, you can easily thicken the ham glaze on the stovetop with a small amount of cornstarch. The choice is entirely yours, allowing you to customize your ham to perfection.

An Unconventional Twist: Cooking Ham with Coca-Cola

For an intriguing and different approach to adding sweetness without relying on brown sugar or fruit, consider using a can of Coca-Cola. This might sound unconventional, but the results are surprisingly delicious! We’ve successfully used this method with our Crockpot ribs recipe, where the soda tenderizes the meat and contributes a subtle, complex sweetness. We’ve also perfected a dedicated Coca-Cola ham recipe that transforms the soda and sugars into a rich, flavorful sauce, creating a memorable holiday ham.

Achieving the Perfect Glaze Consistency: How to Thicken Your Ham Sauce

After your ham has finished cooking, the liquid at the bottom of the slow cooker will be a rich, flavorful sauce, often thin in consistency. If you desire a thicker, more syrupy glaze to drizzle over your ham, it’s incredibly easy to achieve. First, carefully remove some of the liquid from the slow cooker (without the pineapple chunks). In a small separate bowl, whisk together 1 to 3 tablespoons of cornstarch with a small amount of this liquid until smooth, forming a slurry. Then, pour this cornstarch mixture back into the main pot of liquid in your slow cooker or a saucepan on the stovetop. Allow it to simmer gently, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to your desired consistency. This thickened glaze can then be served on the side for guests to spoon over their tender ham slices, adding an extra layer of luscious flavor.

Crockpot Ham Recipe

By Justine
This pineapple crockpot ham recipe is sweet, tender, and delicious. Cooks on its own in your slow cooker and is ready when you are, perfect for holidays!
Prep: 10 mins
Cook: 6 hrs
Total: 3 hrs 10 mins
Servings: 8

Equipment

  • 1 slow cooker (8 quart recommended)

Ingredients

  • 1/4 – 1/2 ham, precooked (we made 1/4 ham)
  • 1 can pineapple, chunks or tidbits (reserve juice)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 4 whole cloves, optional
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 3/4 cup pineapple juice (use what’s in the can)

Instructions

  1. Place your precooked ham inside your slow cooker. A quarter ham fits nicely; a really large Crockpot might accommodate a half ham.
  2. In a small bowl, thoroughly mix your cup of brown sugar with 3/4 cup of pineapple juice. Pour this luscious glaze mixture evenly over the top of your ham.
  3. If using, gently push the whole cloves into the ham (this step is optional but adds wonderful aroma). Pour 1 cup of pineapple chunks or tidbits around and on top of your ham, then drizzle your honey over everything. Secure the lid of your slow cooker.
  4. If cooking a quarter ham, like ours, set your slow cooker to LOW for 3-4 hours, or until it is thoroughly warmed in the center. (Remember, it’s already cooked, so you’re just heating it through and infusing flavor.) If cooking a half ham (assuming it fits), cook on LOW for 6-8 hours or until warmed to your liking. Always check the internal temperature at the minimum cooking time to ensure it reaches at least 145°F.
  5. Halfway through the cooking process, lift the lid and baste the ham generously with the accumulated juices at the bottom of the slow cooker. Before serving, check the internal temperature of the ham in its thickest part; it should register 145°F.
  6. Once heated, carefully remove the ham, slice it to your preferred thickness, and serve it drizzled with the pineapple sauce from the slow cooker. For a thicker sauce, carefully scoop the sauce (without the pineapple chunks) into a small saucepan on your stovetop.
  7. To thicken the sauce: Take a small amount of the sauce liquid out and whisk it together with 1-3 tablespoons of cornstarch in a small bowl until a smooth slurry forms. Pour this slurry back into the saucepan with the remaining sauce and allow it to gently bubble, stirring continuously, until it reaches your desired thickness. Serve this thickened glaze on the side for pouring over individual servings.

A delicious low-carb ham, proving you don’t need excessive sugar for a great glaze.

For those mindful of carbohydrate intake, crafting a low-carb ham glaze is entirely possible without sacrificing flavor. Instead of traditional brown sugar and honey, you can use sugar substitutes like erythritol or stevia to achieve the desired sweetness. Combine these with a sugar-free fruit preserve (like apricot or peach), a splash of apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, and a touch of xanthan gum for thickening. This creates a beautifully balanced, tangy-sweet glaze that still caramelizes nicely and adheres to a low-carb dietary plan, ensuring everyone can enjoy a delectable holiday ham.

The Unbeatable Advantages of Slow Cooking Your Holiday Ham

Choosing to cook your ham in a slow cooker, especially during the bustling holiday season, offers a multitude of practical and culinary benefits:

  • Keep Your Kitchen Cool: You won’t have to heat up your entire house by turning on the oven, a significant advantage, especially for warmer holiday climates or during long cooking times.
  • Free Up Oven Space: During the holidays, oven space is prime real estate! The slow cooker frees up your oven for all those essential side dishes, from roasted vegetables to casseroles and pies, allowing you to manage multiple dishes simultaneously without a culinary traffic jam.
  • Minimal Supervision: This method allows you to leave your ham largely unattended. You can set it and forget it for several hours, giving you precious time to focus on other preparations, entertain guests, or simply relax. It’s perfect if you need to leave the house for a while.
  • Effortless Preparation: It’s often simpler than oven versions, requiring no intricate wrapping in foil or constant monitoring. Just set the temperature, and let the Crockpot work its magic.
  • Unmatched Moisture: Perhaps the main reason we adore this method is how incredibly moist and tender the ham remains throughout the cooking process. The low and slow heat, combined with the enclosed environment, prevents drying out, resulting in a juicy, flavorful ham every time.

In just 3-4 hours for a quarter ham, you can experience the deliciousness and convenience of this recipe. Grab a bone-in or boneless ham and try it for yourself – you’ll wonder why you ever cooked ham any other way. This method guarantees a succulent, perfectly glazed ham that will be the highlight of your holiday table, all while minimizing stress and maximizing flavor.
