Why Bake Cinnamon Rolls in a Slow Cooker?

If you’ve never experienced the joy of baking cinnamon rolls in a slow cooker, you are in for an absolute treat. This innovative cooking hack is incredibly versatile, making it perfect for holidays like Christmas or Easter when you’re hosting a large crowd. Simply set them out on a buffet for a morning feast, or even serve them as a comforting dessert in the evening. It quickly becomes one of our favorite Crockpot recipes due to its sheer convenience and consistently delicious results.

The beauty of the slow cooker method lies in its hands-free nature and even heat distribution. Unlike an oven, which can sometimes dry out delicate pastries, a slow cooker creates a moist, enclosed environment that keeps your cinnamon rolls incredibly soft and tender. This prevents them from becoming tough or over-baked, ensuring a perfectly gooey texture from edge to center. Moreover, it’s a fantastic option during warmer months when you want to avoid heating up your entire kitchen by turning on the oven.

Choosing Your Dough: From Scratch, Refrigerated, or Frozen

The great news is that this slow cooker technique works beautifully with various types of cinnamon roll dough. Your choice simply depends on how much time you have and your preference for homemade versus convenience.

  • From Scratch: For those who love the satisfaction of baking from the ground up, we provide a detailed homemade recipe below. Be prepared to dedicate a couple of hours for rising time, but the reward is undeniably fresh, tender dough.
  • Refrigerated Rolls: Brands like Pillsbury offer a fantastic shortcut. These pre-made rolls are ready to go straight into your slow cooker, drastically cutting down prep time.
  • Frozen Dough: Products like Rhodes frozen rolls are another excellent option. You’ll simply need to follow the package directions for defrosting before proceeding with the slow cooker instructions.

Regardless of your starting point, the slow cooker transforms these doughs into perfectly baked, wonderfully sweet treats. If you opt for packaged dough, be sure to check them around the 1-hour mark, as they may cook slightly faster than homemade versions.

Crafting Homemade Slow Cooker Cinnamon Rolls: Key Ingredients

For those eager to bake their homemade slow cooker cinnamon rolls from scratch, here are the essential ingredients for the dough. This recipe delivers a soft, fluffy texture that perfectly absorbs the sweet cinnamon filling.

Dough Ingredients

  • All-Purpose Flour: The foundational dry ingredient, providing structure to the dough.
  • Active Dry Yeast: This crucial leavening agent gives the rolls their characteristic rise and airy texture.
  • Milk (2% or Whole): Adds richness and moisture, helping to activate the yeast and create a tender dough.
  • Butter (or Dairy-Free Alternative): Contributes to the tender crumb and buttery flavor. Softened butter is key for proper incorporation.
  • Salt: A pinch of salt balances the sweetness and enhances all the other flavors.
  • Sugar: Sweetens the dough and feeds the yeast, aiding in the rising process.
  • Egg (Room Temperature): Adds richness, moisture, and helps bind the dough ingredients together, leading to a softer roll.

Cinnamon Roll Filling

The heart of any great cinnamon roll is its sticky-sweet filling. A simple yet divine mixture is all you need:

  • Softened Butter: Acts as the base, helping to spread the spices evenly.
  • Packed Brown Sugar: Provides a deep, caramel-like sweetness and moisture.
  • Ground Cinnamon: The star spice, delivering that signature warm, aromatic flavor.
  • Granulated Sugar: Enhances the sweetness and texture of the filling.
  • All-Purpose Flour: A small amount helps to thicken the filling slightly, preventing it from oozing out too much during baking.

This simple combination melts into a luscious coating during cooking, ensuring every bite is wonderfully sticky and sweet – exactly what you crave in a perfect cinnamon roll.

Decadent Cream Cheese Frosting

No cinnamon roll is complete without a generous drizzle of creamy frosting. For ultimate ease, you can use a tub of ready-made, melted cream cheese frosting. However, for a truly exceptional experience, our simple homemade cream cheese frosting is unmatched. You will need:

  • Softened Cream Cheese (8 oz): The base for a rich and tangy frosting.
  • Unsalted Butter (Softened): Adds richness and helps create a smooth, spreadable consistency.
  • Vanilla Extract: Enhances the sweet and creamy flavors.
  • Powdered Sugar: Provides sweetness and a smooth, lump-free texture.
  • Milk: Used to adjust the frosting to your desired consistency, from thick to a drizzly glaze.

This versatile frosting is so good, we even use it on our beloved pecan sticky buns, transforming them into another delicious masterpiece.

Equipment

  • 1 slow cooker

Ingredients

  • 2 c all purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 c milk
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 egg

Cinnamon Roll Filling

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 6 tbsp sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp all purpose flour

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tbsp butter, unsalted, softened
  • 1/8 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 c powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup flour and yeast. Set aside. In a saucepan, heat the milk, 3 tablespoons butter, sugar, and salt until 120 degrees F (49 degrees C). Remove from heat and stir until the butter is melted.
  2. Add the warmed liquid mixture to the flour and yeast. Mix on low using a regular paddle attachment or by hand. Add the egg. Gradually add the remaining flour to the dough, a little at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  3. Increase mixer speed to medium until a soft, pliable dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 3 to 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl, turning once to coat both sides. Cover the bowl with a clean dish towel.
  4. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size, which typically takes about 1 ½ hours. Once risen, gently punch the dough down to release the air and turn it out onto a floured surface. Cover and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes. In a separate small bowl, combine all the cinnamon roll filling ingredients until they resemble a sandy mixture.
  5. Roll the rested dough into a large rectangle, approximately 20 inches by 10 inches. Sprinkle the entire surface with the prepared filling mixture, ensuring you leave a 1-inch space along one of the long edges clean, without any filling. Starting from the long side with the filling, carefully roll the dough up tightly, but without excessive pulling or stretching.
  6. Seal the unfilled long edge by pinching it firmly shut along the entire length. Cut the dough log into 12 even slices. A good technique is to cut the log in half, then cut each half in half, and finally cut each quarter into three equal slices. Line a 5 to 6 quart slow cooker with parchment paper, ensuring the paper extends up the sides for easy lifting.
  7. Lightly spritz the parchment paper in the slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Carefully arrange the cinnamon rolls into the slow cooker, leaving a small space between each one to allow for expansion. Wrap a clean dish towel around the slow cooker lid before covering. This towel will absorb condensation, preventing the rolls from becoming soggy.
  8. Cook on high for 1 to 1 ½ hours, or until the cinnamon rolls are cooked through and golden brown on top. While the rolls are baking, prepare your cream cheese frosting: In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, softened butter, and vanilla extract, stirring until thoroughly blended and smooth.
  9. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing until smooth. Then, add the milk a little at a time, stirring until you reach your desired frosting consistency – whether you prefer a thick spread or a thinner drizzle. Once the rolls are cooked, carefully remove them from the slow cooker by lifting the parchment paper. Spread the warm cinnamon rolls generously with the homemade icing and enjoy immediately.

Slow Cooker Apple Cinnamon Rolls

If you want to add apples, you can dice 1/2 of an apple (peeled) and add it into your filling layer, or pour a can of apple pie filling onto the bottom of the slow cooker with the rolls on top.

Cooking Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls in Your Slow Cooker

Absolutely! The slow cooker method is equally effective and convenient for refrigerated Pillsbury cinnamon rolls or any other pre-packaged dough. The core steps remain the same as with homemade dough. The critical element for success is using parchment paper to line your slow cooker. This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a game-changer that allows you to effortlessly lift the entire batch of warm, baked rolls out of the crockpot once they’re done. This prevents sticking and makes serving incredibly simple.

You can arrange the rolls whole, or for a more communal, pull-apart style, you can cut them into smaller pieces before cooking, creating a breakfast casserole similar to our Crockpot Monkey Bread. This makes for a fun and easy sharing experience.

Elevate Your Treat: Slow Cooker Apple Cinnamon Rolls

While classic cinnamon rolls are delightful on their own, adding fruit can take them to the next level. Crafting slow cooker apple cinnamon rolls is a fantastic way to introduce a touch of fruity flavor and extra moisture.

One incredibly easy method is to spread a can of apple pie filling onto the very bottom of your slow cooker, directly on top of the parchment paper, before placing the cinnamon rolls. Once baked, you can invert the entire batch onto a serving plate so the delicious fruit layer is on top. With this method, a simple drizzle of the frosting is often sufficient, or you can even skip it entirely if you prefer the natural sweetness of the apples.

For a fresher, more subtle apple flavor, peel and finely dice half a Granny Smith apple (or another crisp apple variety) and sprinkle it directly into the cinnamon-sugar filling before rolling up your dough. This infuses each bite with a hint of tartness that beautifully complements the sweet spices. You could even combine both methods for an ultimate apple experience! Whether plain or with fruit, these irresistible treats promise no leftovers.

Remember, the slow cooker is incredibly versatile! You can even prepare other dishes, like our slow cooker eggs, in a separate pot to create a complete breakfast spread with protein alongside your sweet rolls.

Storing and Reheating Leftovers

Should you miraculously find yourself with leftover cinnamon rolls (though we doubt it!), they store wonderfully. Once the rolls have completely cooled, wrap them tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Store them on your kitchen counter at room temperature, rather than in the refrigerator, to maintain their soft texture. When you’re ready to enjoy them again, simply place an unwrapped roll on a microwave-safe plate and heat for about 1 minute, or until warmed through. The frosting will re-melt, bringing back that ooey-gooey deliciousness!

Frequently Asked Questions About Slow Cooker Cinnamon Rolls

Should cinnamon rolls be placed close together when baked?

When arranging your slow cooker cinnamon rolls, whether homemade or refrigerated, it’s best to leave a small amount of space between each one—approximately one finger’s width apart. This allows them room to expand and rise without merging into one giant clump, making them easier to separate and serve individually once baked.

Can you bake refrigerated cinnamon rolls in a Crockpot?

Yes, absolutely! Baking Crockpot cinnamon rolls using refrigerated dough is a fantastic, time-saving option. To ensure perfect results, line your Crockpot with parchment paper and wrap a clean dish towel around the lid to absorb steam. This prevents the rolls from becoming soggy. Cook for about an hour or so, and once they’re done, simply drizzle the included frosting right over the top to enjoy a warm, soft breakfast.
