Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli: The Ultimate Family Dinner Recipe
Looking for a crowd-pleasing dinner that’s both easy to make and incredibly delicious? Our Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli recipe is the answer! Whether you use store-bought Pillsbury dough or your favorite homemade pizza dough, this recipe is a guaranteed hit with family and friends. Packed with melty cheese and tender slices of steak, it’s a comforting and satisfying meal that’s ready in under an hour.

As a mom of three, I’m always on the lookout for recipes that make dinner time fun and engaging. Over the years, I’ve found that creating “roll-ups” is a fantastic way to get my kids excited about trying new foods. The beauty of this concept is its versatility – you can fill them with just about anything!
We’ve experimented with countless variations, from pizza roll-ups to sweet dessert-filled treats. The possibilities are endless! But today, we’re focusing on a classic: the Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli. And the secret to a great stromboli? It all starts with the dough…
The Dough: Pillsbury vs. Homemade for Your Cheesesteak Stromboli
When it comes to the dough for your Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli, you have two main options: the convenience of store-bought or the satisfaction of homemade. For a quick and easy meal, I often reach for a tube of Pillsbury pizza dough. It’s readily available and requires minimal effort. But if you’re feeling adventurous, making your own pizza dough can elevate this dish to a whole new level.

The Star Ingredients: Building Your Perfect Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli
To capture the essence of a true Philly cheesesteak, you need the right ingredients. While some variations exist, we’ve tailored this recipe to our family’s preferences. One ingredient we often omit is onions, simply because we’re not huge fans. Feel free to add them (or bell peppers) if you enjoy them!
- Steak: Thinly sliced steak is essential for an authentic cheesesteak experience. We recommend pre-cooking the steak to ensure it’s fully cooked and even more tender when baked inside the stromboli. Season it generously with salt, pepper, and your favorite steak dry rub for maximum flavor.
- Cheese: A generous layer of cheese is what makes this stromboli truly irresistible. We use a combination of shredded mozzarella and provolone. The mozzarella provides that classic cheesy stretch, while the provolone adds a richer, more complex flavor. Shredded cheese melts evenly and creates that perfect ooey-gooey texture, similar to our Sloppy Joe Philly Cheesesteak.
- Dough: As mentioned earlier, you can use store-bought or homemade pizza dough.
- Egg Wash: A simple egg wash brushed over the top of the stromboli before baking gives it a beautiful golden-brown color and a slight sheen.
If you choose to make homemade pizza dough, remember to prepare it in advance to allow time for rising.

Baking to Perfection: How Long to Bake Your Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli
Once assembled, your Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli needs to be baked until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the dough is golden brown. This typically takes around 23 minutes in a preheated oven. Before baking, it will take about 5 minutes to pre-cook the steak slices.
For best results, let the stromboli rest on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes after removing it from the oven. This allows the cheese to firm up slightly, making it easier to slice. Be prepared for a bit of cheesiness – that’s part of the fun of eating comfort food!

Visual Cues: Knowing When Your Stromboli Is Done
How do you know when your Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli is perfectly baked? The top should be a rich, golden-brown color. The meat will be peeking out through the slits on top, with clear juices visible. If the stromboli appears lighter in color, give it another minute or two in the oven and check again.
Dipping Delights: The Perfect Sauces to Serve with Your Stromboli
The fun doesn’t stop at baking! The perfect dipping sauce can take your Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli to the next level. Our go-to choice is marinara sauce, but the kids sometimes prefer ranch dressing. For a truly unique experience, I highly recommend trying our Mustard Pretzel Dip! The combination is simply amazing.
