Ziploc Bag Bread: A Kid-Friendly Baking Adventure

My three daughters already show a keen interest in culinary arts, but their baking explorations had been somewhat limited. This week, we decided it was the perfect time to bake bread at home! What we discovered was a method so simple and engaging, it quickly became a new favorite.

This remarkable bread recipe stands out because it requires no fancy equipment. Forget the bread machine or even a stand mixer; all you need are your hands, a freezer bag, and a lightly floured surface for the final kneading. This minimalist approach makes it incredibly accessible for young aspiring bakers and takes the intimidation out of traditional bread-making.

  • Our journey into bread making in a bag began when we partnered with 4-H and explored their “Inspire Kids to Do Activity Guide.” Among many captivating ideas, this particular bread in a bag activity instantly caught our attention as a genuinely fun and educational experience we had to try!

Why “Bread in a Bag” is Perfect for Young Bakers

One of the unique advantages of baking bread using this “in a bag” technique is that it doesn’t necessitate a specific warm spot for the dough to rise. This often leads to a quicker overall process, meaning less waiting time for eager children! While this recipe is fantastic for a standard loaf, you could easily adapt it for mini loaf pans, just remember to adjust the baking time accordingly for smaller portions.

True to its name, the 4-H “Inspire Kids to Do” program aims to encourage children to try new things and gain experiences they might not have encountered before. Last month, we delved into what the 4-H Program is all about and how you can find a local chapter. We highly recommend getting involved with such a beneficial organization! Now, let’s take a closer look at the simple steps of our delightful activity:

Empowering Kids in the Kitchen: The 4-H Way

We sourced our instructions directly from the “Inspire Kids to Do Activity Guide,” and a crucial part of the experience was having my daughters follow the directions themselves. I made it clear I was there for support, but my main goal was for them to truly grasp that they possessed the capability to create bread in a bag from start to finish. And indeed, they succeeded magnificently!

Of course, I was on hand to offer clarification when needed, especially since the two main participants were 10 and 11 years old. If your children are younger, more direct assistance will naturally be required. Nevertheless, the transformation of simple ingredients into a pliable dough was a captivating process they absolutely adored observing and participating in.

Mastering Whole Wheat Bread in a Bag: Step-by-Step

Creating your own delicious whole wheat bread with this simple “in a bag” method is an excellent way to teach kids about baking. Follow these easy steps to knead, rise, and bake your way to homemade goodness.

Gathering Your Ingredients and Initial Mix

Before you begin, ensure you have all your ingredients measured and ready. Precision in baking is key, even with a fun, kid-friendly recipe like this!

  • Add dry milk, 1 cup of all-purpose flour, sugar, and one packet of quick-rising yeast into a large freezer bag.
  • Gently squeeze out any excess air from the bag before sealing it tightly at the top. This helps create a better environment for mixing.
  • Using your hands on the outside of the bag, thoroughly mix all these dry ingredients together. Ensure they are well combined.
  • Carefully add the vegetable oil and one cup of very hot water to the bag. (Parental assistance is highly recommended for handling hot water; we found a Keurig made this step quick and easy for precise pouring.)
  • Wrap a dish towel around the freezer bag to protect your hands from the heat and mix these wet ingredients with the dry. Encourage your child to really “knead” the mixture with their fingers through the bag until everything is fully incorporated and a sticky dough begins to form.
  • Now, add the entire cup of whole wheat flour. Reseal the bag, remove the air, and continue to knead vigorously for several minutes through the bag. You’ll notice the dough starting to come together and resemble a more traditional bread dough consistency.

The Final Knead, Rise, and Bake

This phase introduces classic bread-making techniques, allowing children to experience the transformation of dough firsthand.

  • Gradually add small amounts of the remaining all-purpose flour, a little at a time, continuing to knead the dough within the bag. Do this until the dough becomes stiff enough to pull away from the sides of the bag cleanly and reaches a proper bread consistency.
  • Once the dough is ready, remove it from the bag and place it on a lightly floured cutting board. This is where your kids will learn the traditional art of kneading with the palms of their hands—a completely new and tactile experience for many!
  • After sufficient kneading (2-4 minutes until smooth and elastic), place the dough in a bowl, cover it, and allow it to rest for 10 minutes. This resting period is a vital step in bread making, teaching kids about the importance of patience and how dough develops.
  • Next comes the exciting part: deciding whether to form a classic loaf of bread or individual rolls. One of my daughters chose a loaf, while the other opted for rolls, which was perfect for comparing the results!
  • Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190°C). It’s a great opportunity to explain why preheating is crucial for proper and even baking, ensuring your bread rises and cooks correctly.
  • Bake your bread for approximately 25 to 30 minutes. Keep an eye on it, as baking times can vary slightly.
  • To check for doneness, carefully insert a knife into the center of the loaf or a roll. If it comes out clean, your bread is ready!
  • Once baked, let it cool slightly, then slice, dip in melted butter (optional, but highly recommended!), and enjoy the fruits of your labor!

Witnessing her perfectly baked loaf, my daughter beamed with pride—a true bread in a bag success! If baking isn’t the primary interest for your family, remember that the 4-H “Inspire Kids to Do Activity Guide” offers a multitude of other engaging and fun activities for children. Set aside some time this weekend to browse it together. Discover what sparks their curiosity, gather your materials, and embark on a new adventure. It’s an invaluable way to strengthen your bond with your children, something we all cherish, don’t we?!

Ingredients

  • 2 c all purpose flour
  • 1 pkg. quick-rising yeast
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp nonfat dry milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 c hot water
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 c whole wheat flour

Instructions

  1. Combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, yeast, sugar, dry milk, and salt into a large freezer bag. Squeeze out the air and zip it closed.
  2. Shake the bag vigorously to thoroughly blend all the dry ingredients. Then, add the hot water and vegetable oil to this mixture.
  3. Reseal your bag, ensuring air is removed, and work the ingredients together using your fingers through the bag until they are well combined and a sticky dough begins to form.
  4. Add the whole wheat flour, reseal the bag, and mix again thoroughly, kneading the dough from the outside of the bag.
  5. Gradually add small amounts of the remaining 1 cup of all-purpose flour (as needed), kneading within the bag between additions, until the dough stiffens and starts to pull away cleanly from the sides of the bag.
  6. Once the dough has reached the desired consistency, remove it from the bag and place it onto a lightly floured cutting board. Knead it with the palms of your hands for 2-4 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  7. Place the kneaded dough in a bowl, cover it with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel, and let it rest in a warm location for 10 minutes.
  8. After resting, use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a 12×7 inch rectangle. Carefully place the dough into a loaf pan that has been sprayed with non-stick spray.
  9. Cover the loaf pan with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel. Place it in a warm location and allow it to rise for about 20 minutes, or until the dough has doubled in size.
  10. Bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190°C) for 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean.
