Simple Mini Easter Egg Bread Rolls

The Easter season is upon us once again, a time for celebration, family, and delicious food. If you’re not an avid baker who loves to make everything from scratch, we have a fantastic “cheater” version of traditional Easter bread that yields stunning and incredibly tasty results with minimal effort. By utilizing Rhodes frozen rolls, we’ve transformed a potentially complex recipe into a simple, enjoyable baking experience. This recipe has quickly become our favorite side dish, universally loved by everyone who tries it.

Our journey with these versatile frozen rolls began earlier this year when we experimented with making frozen rolls in an air fryer. The outcome was so incredibly delicious that it sparked a wave of creativity, leading us to experiment endlessly with them, making all sorts of things! We don’t just adore their yeast dinner rolls; we’ve even used their frozen cinnamon rolls to craft a decadent chocolate Rhodes monkey bread. If you haven’t tried that, you absolutely must! With Easter approaching, it was only natural to think, “Surely, we can use these amazing rolls to create something special for Easter dinner too!”

Rhodes Frozen Rolls: The Secret to Easy Easter Bread

Traditionally, Easter bread often appears as a large, impressive wreath that requires slicing for serving. However, we have a particular fondness for finger foods and practical tips on how to efficiently serve larger crowds. You’ll undoubtedly agree that crafting these mini frozen bread dough recipes into individual portions is far more convenient than managing a whole loaf that needs to be cut. Inspired by this desire for easier serving, I set out to adapt this cherished traditional Italian dish into a charming, personal-sized offering.

The Symbolism and Tradition of Easter Bread

Easter bread, known in various cultures as “pane di Pasqua” in Italy, “paska” in Ukraine, or “tsoureki” in Greece, carries deep symbolic meaning, especially during the Lenten season and Easter celebrations. The bread’s characteristic round or braided wreath shape is steeped in tradition, often signifying the crown of thorns worn by Jesus Christ, a poignant reminder of his sacrifice and resurrection. In many traditional recipes, brightly dyed hard-boiled Easter eggs are artfully nestled within the braids of the bread before baking, representing rebirth, new life, and the renewal of spring. These breads are often adorned with festive sprinkles or glazes, adding to their celebratory appeal and making them a central part of Easter feasts.

Preparing Frozen Dough: Do I Need to Thaw Frozen Bread Dough Before Baking?

Absolutely, thawing your frozen bread dough is an essential first step for this recipe. Whether you’re working with a full loaf or individual rolls, they need to be fully defrosted and pliable before you can begin shaping them into the intricate braided wreaths. This thawing process typically takes a few hours on the countertop. While the back of your Rhodes package will provide specific thawing instructions, we’ll also walk you through our recommended method below to ensure your dough is perfectly conditioned for braiding and baking. Proper thawing allows the yeast to activate and the dough to become soft and elastic, making it easy to work with and ensuring a light, fluffy finished product.

Rhodes Rolls Recipe Steps

In developing this recipe, my goal was to replicate the classic, beautiful aesthetic of traditional Easter bread while simplifying the process as much as humanly possible. Instead of using dyed hard-boiled eggs, which are traditional but often go uneaten or create extra mess, I opted for a fun and delicious alternative: colorful chocolate-covered malted balls! This ingenious swap means there’s no need to peel eggs at the table, eliminating mess and making the entire treat consumable. Plus, who can resist a chocolate surprise egg? This playful twist is guaranteed to make you a hero in the eyes of any child (and most adults!).

Essential Ingredient Notes for Your Mini Easter Bread

For this delightful recipe, I utilized 24 defrosted Rhodes frozen dinner rolls to create 12 individual Easter bread wreaths. This quantity can easily be halved if you’re making a smaller batch, or doubled if you’re feeding a larger crowd. Each ingredient plays a crucial role in achieving the perfect balance of flavor and presentation:

  • Frozen Dinner Rolls: The star of our semi-homemade recipe. Ensure they are fully thawed to achieve the necessary pliability for shaping. Rhodes rolls are specifically recommended for their quality and ease of use.
  • Egg Wash: A simple mixture of one large egg and a teaspoon of water, whisked together. This egg wash is brushed over the dough before baking, creating that beautiful, glossy, golden-brown finish that makes these rolls so appealing. Learn more about making a perfect egg wash recipe here.
  • Sprinkles: Add a vibrant pop of color and a touch of festive fun. Choose multi-colored sprinkles to enhance the Easter theme.
  • Chocolate Eggs: Our delightful alternative to traditional hard-boiled eggs. These small, candy-coated chocolate eggs are placed in the center of each baked wreath, providing a delicious surprise and making the rolls even more kid-friendly.

These mini Easter egg breads are always a huge hit! They disappeared incredibly fast in my house once my kids (and husband) discovered them. It’s a fantastic recipe to involve the little ones in; they’ll love helping with the braiding and sprinkling!

Creative Variations and Serving Suggestions

While delicious on their own, these Easter egg breads can be customized to suit your preferences:

  • Sweet & Salty Glaze: For an extra layer of flavor, once the rolls are fresh out of the oven, brush them with melted butter while still warm. This adds a rich, savory note. For an irresistible sweet and salty combination, lightly sprinkle granulated sugar over the melted butter.
  • Orange Zest Infusion: Add a teaspoon of fresh orange zest to your dough as you’re shaping it for a subtle, aromatic citrus flavor that brightens the bread.
  • Cream Cheese Glaze: Instead of sprinkles, a simple cream cheese glaze (powdered sugar, softened cream cheese, and a touch of milk) drizzled over cooled bread can turn them into an even more decadent treat.
  • Nutty Topping: Before baking, press a few chopped almonds or pecans onto the egg-washed dough for added texture and flavor.
  • Savory Herb Rolls: For a savory twist, mix dried herbs like oregano, basil, and garlic powder into the dough when rolling it out. Omit the sprinkles and chocolate eggs, and serve as a fragrant dinner roll.

These breads are wonderfully versatile and can be enjoyed for Easter breakfast, brunch, or as a delightful side dish with your main meal. Serve them warm with a knob of butter, or enjoy them as a sweet treat with a cup of coffee or tea.

How to Make Mini Easter Bread Wreaths

Mastering the Braid: Simple Techniques for Beautiful Easter Bread

Creating the signature braided look for these Easter breads is much simpler than it appears, especially with our two-strand braiding method. While you could certainly opt for a more complex three-strand braid for extra flair, using just two pieces of dough simplifies the process significantly without compromising on visual appeal. The technique involves repeatedly crossing one strand over the other, then sealing the ends together to form a perfect circle. Once braided and shaped into a wreath, a generous brush of egg wash will give your mini breads that beautiful, inviting shine you expect to see on traditional Easter bread. Since the egg wash adds a touch of moisture, it’s the perfect opportunity to “jazz them up” with a colorful array of sprinkles before they go into the oven. The chocolate eggs, of course, are added after baking for a melt-in-your-mouth surprise.

To begin, take two thawed Rhodes rolls and gently roll each one into a long, snake-like shape, aiming for approximately 6 inches in length. Pinch the top ends of the two dough ropes firmly together. Holding this joined end down, gently pull the bottom strand over the top of the other. Then, take the new bottom strand and gently pull it over the top of the first piece. Continue this simple crisscross motion, mimicking a two-strand braid, working your way down until you reach the end of your dough ropes. Once braided, firmly secure the bottom ends by pinching and pressing them together. Finally, bring the two braided ends together to form a wreath shape, sealing them securely to create a complete circle. This careful shaping ensures your mini Easter breads hold their festive form throughout baking.

Easter Egg Bread Recipe

By Justine

This easy recipe for mini Italian Easter egg bread uses Rhodes frozen dough! These charming rolls are the perfect Spring side dish you’ll absolutely adore.

Prep: 15 mins
Cook: 17 mins
Servings: 12

Equipment

  • 1 baking sheet

Ingredients

  • 24 small dinner rolls, Rhodes frozen, thawed for 3 hours
  • 1 tsp water
  • 1 tbsp sprinkles
  • 1 large egg, to make egg wash
  • 12 small chocolate eggs

Instructions

  1. Lay 24 Rhodes frozen dinner rolls on a piece of parchment paper (or inside a cake pan) that has been very lightly sprayed with non-stick spray. Cover with a piece of plastic wrap that has also been lightly sprayed with non-stick spray.
  2. Allow them to defrost and rise slightly for approximately 3 hours. *If the outside of any roll appears a bit dry from air exposure, simply pick it up and fold it in half so the dry top is now on the inside. Lightly grease your hands with olive oil and roll each roll out into a long snake shape, similar to how you would with playdough.
  3. Take two rolled-out dough pieces, ensuring they are each approximately 6 inches long. Press the top ends of the two pieces firmly together. Hold this joined end down. Gently pull the piece whose end is on the bottom over the top of the other piece. Then, gently pull the other piece and cross it over the first piece.
  4. Continue this braiding motion (as if you are braiding with just two pieces) by crossing one strand over the other as many times as possible until you reach the end of the dough ropes. Secure the ends together by pressing down firmly.
  5. Bring the two ends of the braided dough together to form a wreath shape and seal the ends securely, creating a complete circle.
  6. Place a fresh piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet and arrange the dough wreaths, ensuring there is enough space between each one to allow for rising during baking. In a small bowl, whisk 1 egg and 1 teaspoon of water together to create an egg wash. Brush this mixture generously over the top of each dough wreath, then sprinkle with colorful sprinkles.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Bake the wreaths for 17 minutes. Carefully remove them from the oven and slide the parchment paper (with the rolls) off the hot baking sheet immediately to prevent them from continuing to bake and over-browning.
  8. Once the Easter egg breads have cooled sufficiently, place a chocolate egg in the center of each wreath and enjoy this festive treat!
  9. *Alternative – For a bolder salty-sweet flavor, once the breads are removed from the oven, brush melted butter generously over the top of each one while still warm, then sprinkle with a light dusting of granulated sugar.

Tips for Success: Making Your Easter Egg Bread Perfect

  • Don’t Rush Thawing: Allow ample time for the rolls to thaw and slightly rise. A slow, even thaw results in more pliable dough that’s easier to shape and bakes more uniformly. If your kitchen is cool, it might take a bit longer than 3 hours.
  • Prevent Sticking: Always use parchment paper on your baking sheet and lightly spray both the paper and the plastic wrap covering the dough with non-stick spray. This prevents sticking and makes transfer easier.
  • Gentle Handling: Thawed dough is delicate. Handle it gently when rolling and braiding to avoid tearing or deflating the air pockets, which contribute to the bread’s light texture.
  • Even Braiding: Try to keep the thickness of your dough ropes consistent for an even braid. This also ensures that the bread bakes evenly and looks aesthetically pleasing.
  • Egg Wash Application: Apply the egg wash evenly over the entire surface of the braided dough for a uniform golden shine. Don’t forget the sides of the braids!
  • Watch Your Oven: Ovens can vary. Keep an eye on your breads during the last few minutes of baking to ensure they don’t over-brown. The goal is a beautiful golden color.
  • Cooling is Key: Removing the breads from the hot baking sheet immediately after baking prevents them from continuing to cook and becoming dry or overly crusty. Allow them to cool slightly before adding the chocolate eggs.
  • Storage: These mini Easter breads are best enjoyed fresh. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days to maintain their softness.

A Festive Touch for Your Easter Celebrations

These mini Easter egg breads with frozen dough are more than just a recipe; they are an invitation to create beautiful, memorable moments during your holiday celebrations.
