Discover the Route of the Hiawatha: A Journey Through History and Nature
The Hiawatha Bike Trail is much more than just a bike path; it’s a meticulously maintained section of the historic Milwaukee Road railway, transformed into a scenic recreational trail. Here’s what makes this trail a must-visit destination:
- **Historic Transformation:** This picturesque route was once a vital railroad track, now repurposed for cycling enthusiasts.
- **Prime Location:** Conveniently located approximately 45 minutes north of Coeur d’Alene, it offers an accessible escape into nature.
- **Trail Length:** The full ride spans an enjoyable 15 miles, largely downhill, making it suitable for a wide range of ages and skill levels.
- **Starting Point:** Your adventure begins at the Lookout Pass Ski Area, where you can access the trail and its facilities.
- **Nearby Camping:** For those seeking an immersive experience, several camping options are available in the vicinity.
- **Operating Season:** The trail typically opens from late May (around May 26th) and closes in late September (around September 23rd), offering a perfect window for summer and early fall excursions.
As you traverse the trail, you’ll pass through 10 historic train tunnels, each offering a unique microclimate that can feel surprisingly cold even on a warm day. We highly recommend bringing a light jacket or sweatshirt that can be easily tied around your waist, allowing you to layer up or down as needed. The temperature drop inside these long tunnels, especially the Taft Tunnel, is quite significant!
- **Spectacular Trestles:** Prepare to be amazed by 7 sky-high trestles that offer breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness. These engineering marvels are definitely photo opportunities you won’t want to miss!
- **Bitterroot Mountain Scenery:** The trail gracefully follows the contours of the majestic Bitterroot Mountains, immersing you in dense forests and stunning natural landscapes.
- **Mostly Downhill Ride:** One of the most appealing aspects of the Route of the Hiawatha is its gentle downhill grade. This makes it incredibly easy and enjoyable for families, even those with young children who might be in bike trailers. It’s a truly family-friendly adventure where everyone can participate.
Your journey kicks off with an iconic start: the Taft Tunnel. This impressive 1.66-mile-long tunnel is not only incredibly long but also quite chilly inside, making a strong bike light absolutely essential for visibility (rented bikes come equipped with lights). Navigating this dark, cool passage creates an exciting and memorable beginning to your Hiawatha adventure, setting the stage for the wonders to come.

How Challenging is the Hiawatha Bike Trail? Accessibility for All Skill Levels
While the Hiawatha Trail spans 15 miles, its design makes it remarkably accessible and enjoyable for nearly everyone. The predominant downhill slope means less effort and more opportunity to soak in the scenery. We opted not to bring our own bikes due to the hassle of transport and storage during our extended road trip. However, you are certainly welcome to use your own bicycles if you prefer. Alternatively, bike rentals are readily available at the trail’s starting point, typically costing around $30 per person, providing a convenient solution for visitors.
Regardless of whether you bring your own bike or rent one, a trail pass is required for everyone riding this spectacular route. For us, purchasing shuttle bus tickets for the return journey was an absolute must. Knowing it would be a significant ride for our entire family, I wanted to eliminate any chance of someone, especially myself, struggling to ride all the way back up the gentle incline. The shuttle is truly a game-changer, turning a potentially strenuous return trip into a relaxing and scenic ride.
- **The Convenient Shuttle Service:** With a shuttle ticket, all bikes are loaded onto the back of an old-school bus, transporting riders comfortably back to the top of the trail. The ride typically takes about 30 minutes, offering a chance to rest and reflect on the adventure. I can’t emphasize enough how glad we were to have bought those bus tickets – they truly enhanced our overall experience!
Understanding the Cost to Ride the Hiawatha Trail
Admittedly, the total cost for our family of five was a consideration, coming in at approximately $220. Being budget-conscious, I initially hesitated, but my husband, an avid mountain biker, recognized this as a once-in-a-lifetime experience he simply couldn’t miss. And he was absolutely right! I had a strong feeling this bike ride would create indelible memories, and it absolutely did.
Our total package included everything needed for a seamless adventure: bike rentals for each family member, individual trail passes to access the scenic route, and those invaluable bus passes for a comfortable shuttle back to the top. While it was an investment, the unparalleled experience, the joy on our children’s faces, and the stunning memories we created made every penny worth it. It’s an investment in family bonding and an adventure you’ll recount for years to come.

Here we are, roughly midway through our journey, taking a well-deserved break. I initially wondered how our youngest, at 10 years old, would manage the full ride, but she absolutely loved every minute! The ride itself is incredibly fun, but an added bonus is the opportunity to connect with other families along the way. Inevitably, you’ll find yourselves pausing here and there, just like we did, to chat with fellow adventurers, sharing stories and learning about where everyone is from. It fosters a wonderful sense of community on the trail.
Best Time to Experience the Hiawatha Trail: Tips for Planning Your Visit
To maximize your enjoyment of the Hiawatha Bike Trail, timing is key. We highly recommend planning your visit for early June. During this period, the weather is typically mild and pleasant, preventing it from getting uncomfortably hot. The trail’s operating season runs from June through early September, as the weather begins to shift dramatically after that, making conditions less ideal for biking.
During our ride, we had the pleasure of meeting people from all over the world, including a lovely family from Australia! Remarkably, we also encountered another family who lived just minutes from us back home in Boise, highlighting the trail’s broad appeal. While we didn’t stay directly near the trail, we secured a great hotel deal on Groupon for accommodations in Coeur d’Alene. This proved to be an excellent base, as we also had friends to visit in the area. We highly recommend exploring Coeur d’Alene for lodging and additional activities during your visit to the region.
Remember those awe-inspiring trestles I mentioned earlier, originally constructed for the old railroad? Here’s a closer look at one of them! We paused on this particular trestle, simply taking in the magnificent views. The sheer scale and beauty are truly incredible, especially for those accustomed to city life. It’s a powerful reminder that such pristine and historic natural areas still exist, offering a unique blend of adventure and tranquility.
- Reflecting on our entire road trip, we often discuss how the Hiawatha Bike Trail was undoubtedly one of the best vacation spots for kids, offering a perfect blend of exercise, nature, and shared family moments.

Embrace the Adventure: The Magic of Family Travel
If you haven’t yet embarked on significant travels with your children, I wholeheartedly encourage you to start! Whether you have just a day off here and there to explore new areas close to home, or a full week to undertake a memorable road trip like ours, the benefits of family travel are immense. Consider options ranging from camping under the stars to finding reasonably priced hotels that fit your budget.
For families, I highly recommend renting a house or vacation rental. This often provides more space, privacy, and amenities, leading to a happier and more relaxed experience for everyone. Websites like Airbnb, and many other platforms similar to Airbnb, offer a wide array of options to find the perfect home base for your adventures.
Traveling is arguably the greatest gift you can bestow upon your children—and indeed, upon yourself. It creates shared memories, broadens perspectives, fosters resilience, and strengthens family bonds. The Hiawatha Bike Trail is a shining example of how a single destination can encapsulate all these wonderful aspects, providing an enriching adventure that will resonate with your family for years to come.
