Never approach, feed, or harass any wildlife.

Of course, no visit to Yellowstone is complete without heading to the wondrous Old Faithful Geyser. This iconic active geyser has been captivating visitors for centuries, erupting with remarkable consistency, almost on the hour, every hour. The sheer predictability of its eruptions is nothing short of amazing, offering a natural spectacle that truly embodies the park’s geological power.

• While the anticipation and eruption of Old Faithful are undeniably impressive, it’s worth noting that Yellowstone holds so many diverse and surprising wonders. For us, while Old Faithful was a fantastic experience, other features within the park resonated even more profoundly.

Nevertheless, we joined the hundreds of other people gathered around the viewing area, eagerly awaiting its hourly performance. And yes, it was incredibly cool to witness this natural phenomenon erupt so consistently. The roar of the water, the towering plume of steam reaching skyward, and the collective “oohs” and “aahs” from the crowd create an unforgettable atmosphere. After soaking in this classic Yellowstone moment, we ventured off to explore other equally captivating areas of the park, each with its own unique charm and geological marvels.

To truly appreciate the grandeur of Yellowstone, dedicating several days to exploration is ideal. We managed to drive around the entire park during our visit, making sure to hit various distinct regions. One day, we headed north to Mammoth Hot Springs because its name alone sounded intriguing! When it comes to finding the best vacation spots for kids, I believe it has to include something they’ve never seen before and likely won’t see anywhere else. Mammoth Hot Springs definitely delivers on that promise.

• The terraces here are unlike anything else in the park, formed by thousands of years of hot, calcium carbonate-rich water flowing over the landscape. Having a bit of information about what they’re seeing is incredibly helpful for kids. As you walk the extensive boardwalks, you can discuss the fascinating geology around you, answering their inevitable stream of questions about how these unique formations came to be.

I had visited some hot springs in Mammoth Lakes, California, coincidentally also named Mammoth, but nothing prepared me for the sheer scale and distinctiveness of Yellowstone’s Mammoth Hot Springs. The continuously bubbling waters, the brilliant white and terracotta-colored travertine rock formations, and the intricate pools of water were a sight I had never encountered before. A series of well-maintained wooden boardwalks allows visitors to explore both the Upper and Lower Terraces safely, providing close-up views of these active, ever-changing geological wonders.

We spent most of the day exploring this area, partly due to the driving time to and from our Airbnb near the West Yellowstone entrance. If you’re looking for a comfortable place to stay during your visit, I highly recommend renting a vacation house or cabin rather than a traditional hotel. Rentals often provide more space, privacy, and the convenience of a kitchen, which can be a huge money-saver for families.

• Mammoth Hot Springs also boasts a really cute village with charming shops, restaurants, and convenience stores. It’s also home to the park’s historic Fort Yellowstone, which houses the Yellowstone National Park Headquarters, offering a glimpse into the park’s rich history.

After a morning of exploration, we enjoyed lunch in the village, gassed up our car, and took a different route back to our lodging, eager to discover what other wonders the “other side” of the park held for us. This flexibility is a huge advantage of a family road trip.

Yellowstone’s magic lies not just in its famous attractions, but also in the countless smaller, yet equally captivating, geological features scattered throughout. Our return journey revealed one such marvel that truly stood out.

Dragon’s Mouth Spring and the Mud Volcano Area

This is what we discovered on the way back! It was a small parking lot and wayside stop, much like many others in the park, but it looked distinctly different, so we pulled over – and it was truly awesome! You’ll find geysers, fumaroles, and hot springs literally on both sides of the roads everywhere in Yellowstone. Some are quite small and subtle, while others are incredibly large and dramatic. Dragon’s Mouth Spring, located within the Mud Volcano area, was particularly unique and we’d highly recommend checking it out for its raw, primal energy.

Here’s a peek at this fascinating sight, part of an area known for its tumultuous and sometimes eerie geothermal activity. Dragon’s Mouth Spring is distinct because it’s not a geyser that erupts skyward, but rather a large, cavernous hot spring that bubbles, roars, and “spits” water and steam from deep within. The sounds emanating from the cave are often described as dragon-like growls or heavy breathing, making it an incredibly atmospheric spot. It’s definitely another must-see when exploring what to do in Yellowstone with kids, as it sparks imagination and wonder.

Adjacent to Dragon’s Mouth Spring, you’ll find a massive, mud-filled hot spring that constantly bubbles and churns. The ground here is visibly hot, and you can feel the intense geothermal heat radiating several feet away from the edge of the pools. The entire Mud Volcano area is characterized by its powerful sulfurous odors and the active, gurgling mud pots like Mud Volcano and Sulphur Caldron, which demonstrate the vigorous geological activity happening just beneath the surface.

I will mention that the Mud Volcano area, due to its high sulfur content, does have a very strong smell, often likened to rotten eggs. It’s still totally worth the stop to experience these raw, powerful features. A common tip? Just breathe through your mouth if the smell becomes too overwhelming! It’s a small price to pay for witnessing such unique natural phenomena.

Of course, with any other National Park we visit, a significant part of our experience involves a lot of walking and what I like to call “gentle hiking.” Yellowstone offers an incredible network of trails, catering to all levels of fitness and experience, from easy strolls on boardwalks to more strenuous backcountry treks.

• There are tons of trails you can take, whether you prefer an easy interpretive walk or a more challenging, full-day hike. We always recommend choosing trails that align with your family’s comfort level and physical abilities. Yellowstone boasts several trails as awesome and picturesque as those found in Zion National Park Utah and the Grand Canyon, offering diverse scenery from cascading waterfalls to panoramic vistas.

For families with younger children, stick to the extensive boardwalk systems around geyser basins like Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring (Midway Geyser Basin), and Mammoth Hot Springs. These paved or wooden paths are stroller-friendly and offer safe viewing of geothermal features.
