We’ve just returned from an incredible five-day family vacation in Yosemite, California, and it’s clear there are countless things to do in Yosemite with kids during the summertime. While it’s challenging to distill our experience into a short list, we’re thrilled to share the highlights that made our trip so special. In our opinion, Yosemite National Park stands out as one of the best vacation spots for kids. It offers an unparalleled opportunity to connect with nature, create lasting family bonds, and immerse yourselves in stunning landscapes. Exploring Yosemite with your family offers an experience that feels like you can travel for free, given the endless natural attractions and activities available.

Planning Your Yosemite Family Adventure: Essential Tips for Visiting with Kids

Embarking on a family trip to Yosemite requires a bit of planning, especially if you’re aiming for a summer visit. Our own experience began with setting up camp just outside the park’s boundaries. Since our trip was a last-minute decision, we unfortunately couldn’t secure a coveted spot inside Yosemite itself.

Accommodation in Yosemite: Book Early! It’s crucial to plan your stay well in advance – often a year or more – to secure reservations for tents, cabins, or hotel rooms within the park. This foresight will significantly enhance your experience by minimizing travel time to and from attractions each day. For those considering camping, don’t forget to review our guide on things to pack for camping to ensure you’re fully prepared.

National Park Passes: Your Gateway to Adventure. Before you even leave home, remember to grab your free admission to National Parks pass. Programs like “Every Kid Outdoors” offer free access for fourth graders and their families, making national park visits even more accessible. This pass can be a huge saver and a fantastic way to encourage young explorers.

Is Yosemite Kid-Friendly? Absolutely!

If you haven’t yet introduced your family to the magic of a National Park, Yosemite is an absolute must-do. Not only will adults revel in its majestic beauty, but it will also engrave itself as a cherished memory for your children. The park offers an environment ripe for learning, exploration, and adventure for all ages. From wildlife spotting to discovering towering waterfalls, Yosemite provides a captivating backdrop for family bonding.

Yosemite Valley Floor Bus Tour: A Great Start for Families

The first activity we embarked on once inside Yosemite was the Valley Floor bus tour, and it was a brilliant way to kick off our exploration:

  • This guided tour lasted approximately two hours, taking us to some of Yosemite’s most iconic and beautiful sites, including views of El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, and Half Dome.
  • It’s an excellent option for families with kids because the bus is open-air, offering unobstructed panoramic views from every seat. Children remain comfortable and engaged without the need for extensive walking.
  • The tour includes convenient stops every 20 minutes or so, allowing passengers to disembark, explore a bit, stretch their legs, and utilize restroom facilities – a critical feature when traveling with little ones!

The stunning picture at the very top of this post was captured during one of these stops, truly showcasing the park’s splendor and becoming one of our favorite family photos from the trip.

Things to Do in Yosemite Beyond Hiking: Culinary Delights and Relaxation

While hiking is undoubtedly a cornerstone of the Yosemite experience, the park offers much more. On our second day, we indulged in a fantastic culinary adventure at the magnificent Majestic Yosemite Hotel (formerly the Ahwahnee Hotel) dining room, renowned for its incredible meals.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed their buffet, and I specifically ordered their famous Cinnamon Apple Flapjacks, which had been rated A+ in Bon Appetit Magazine – truly an amazing treat!

What truly enhanced our meal was how wonderfully entertained our children were throughout. The Majestic Yosemite Hotel staff thoughtfully provided them with Wikki Stix. This simple yet brilliant idea kept them happily engaged, proving to be a much more creative and less messy alternative to traditional coloring pages. It’s these small, thoughtful touches that make a family vacation truly memorable.

Merced River Rafting: The Ultimate Family Adventure

Without a doubt, the absolute best thing we did in Yosemite with kids was our river rafting trip down the Merced River. This experience was the undisputed highlight of our entire trip, offering a perfect blend of excitement and relaxation for the whole family.

  • The river offers a mostly calm journey, punctuated by just a handful of gentle dips along the way. This makes it ideal for little ones, ensuring a safe and thoroughly enjoyable ride, while also providing a wonderfully relaxing experience for parents.
  • One of the best aspects is the freedom to stop multiple times at small, inviting beaches along the riverbanks. You can take as much time as you like to swim, play, or simply relax before continuing your journey downstream.
  • We highly recommend packing lunches and wearing swimsuits under your clothing. This prepares you for impromptu picnics on the sand and refreshing dips in the cool river waters.
  • The entire experience, from start to finish, typically takes about three hours, allowing for plenty of paddling and play time without being overly strenuous.
  • Conveniently, a shuttle service is available at the end point to pick everyone up and transport you back to your car, making the logistics seamless.

We wholeheartedly recommend this activity to any family visiting Yosemite. It’s an unparalleled way to experience the park’s beauty from a unique perspective and create truly cherished family memories.

Yosemite with Toddlers and Young Children: Gentle Adventures

Yosemite is incredibly welcoming for families with toddlers and young children, offering numerous opportunities for gentle exploration. We spent a significant amount of time simply exploring the park’s natural beauty, capturing countless photos, and making spontaneous stops at scenic roadside spots just like this one.

  • These spontaneous stops were perfect for the kids to get out, stretch their legs, play among the rocks, or even enjoy a refreshing swim in the shallow river waters.
  • On days like these, bringing our beach chairs and packed lunches was a lifesaver. Just sitting back, soaking in the magnificent views, and watching the children delight in their surroundings made for a perfectly serene and memorable day.

The kids absolutely loved splashing in the water and climbing on the smooth river rocks. As we’ve emphasized, there are an abundance of wonderful things to do in Yosemite in the Summertime for every age. We hope these insights provide you with a fantastic starting point for planning your own family adventure.
