Discover the Magic of Instant Pot Lasagna Casserole
This Instant Pot Lasagna Casserole is super cheesy, incredibly comforting, and remarkably easier to eat than traditional lasagna, all while taking less than 30 minutes from start to finish! It captures the same beloved taste and incorporates most of the classic ingredients, but in a brilliant deconstructed format. The simplified preparation means no more wrestling with slippery, flat lasagna noodles. The immense popularity of this dish among our family inspired us to create a comprehensive list of delicious Instant Pot casseroles for you to explore and enjoy.
In the past, our slow cooker was the primary appliance for all our “set-it-and-forget-it” meals. The initial concept for this deconstructed lasagna began in the slow cooker, using similar ingredients. However, the noodles had to be added later in the cooking process to prevent them from becoming overly soft, and the entire meal required an all-day commitment. This meant planning ahead and starting early in the morning. The pressure cooker, however, has revolutionized this dish, transforming it into a speedy, one-pot marvel that retains all the flavor and comfort without the lengthy wait.
For those new to the exciting world of pressure cooking, we’ve gathered a wealth of easy one-pot meal recipes. To help you get started, here are a few fundamental tips for mastering your pressure cooker:
- Make sure to bookmark our dedicated Instant Pot recipes page. We regularly update it with new and delicious creations, ensuring you always have fresh meal ideas!
- An essential tool for any pressure cooker enthusiast is our Instant Pot cooking times cheat sheet. Print it out and keep it handy; it will help you quickly determine the ideal cooking durations for various ingredients like meats, vegetables, and beans.
- I highly recommend investing in a non-stick inner pot for your pressure cooker. This small upgrade drastically reduces food sticking to the bottom, making both cooking and cleanup significantly easier.
- Even with a non-stick pot, understanding how to deglaze a pressure cooker after sautéing is a valuable skill. It prevents the “burn” notice from being triggered and ensures all those flavorful browned bits contribute to the overall taste of your dish.
For your reference, I primarily use a 6-quart Instant Pot model for developing all the recipes featured here. It’s a versatile and reliable size for most family meals.

Some might affectionately call this “cheater lasagna” due to its incredible simplicity compared to the lengthy “traditional method.” However, it undeniably delivers the same authentic, heartwarming taste we adore, all accomplished in a remarkably shorter timeframe. A significant advantage is the absence of those large, often unwieldy lasagna noodles, which can be challenging for younger children to eat. If you’re searching for a wonderfully satisfying comfort food that your entire family will enjoy without complaint, you absolutely must give this recipe a try!
You don’t need a specific brand of pressure cooker to make this delicious meal. We test recipes using several different brands at home, including Mealthy and Crockpot Express models. This recipe is also perfectly suited to be an easy Ninja Foodi recipe. All you require are the sauté function to brown your meat and the high-pressure cooking capability (using the appropriate pressure lid, not the air fryer lid, for the Foodi). The simplicity and speed remain consistent across different pressure cooking appliances.
There are numerous fantastic aspects to this one-pot meal. Foremost is its genuine “one-pot” nature – you’ll use a single pot to brown your ground meat and cook your pasta, eliminating the need for extra dishes and simplifying cleanup. Furthermore, you have complete flexibility in your choice of pasta. I often opt for whatever medium-sized pasta is available or on sale, whether it’s penne, elbow macaroni, or shells. I find that medium-sized pasta shapes are best as they cook evenly and integrate beautifully with the sauce, without being too bulky or too small.

Essential Ingredient Notes for Your Perfect Lazy Lasagna Casserole
Crafting a truly exceptional Instant Pot lasagna casserole starts with understanding the roles and versatility of each ingredient:
- Pasta: The beauty of this deconstructed lasagna lies in its adaptability. While penne pasta is a popular choice, many other medium-sized pasta shapes work wonderfully. Consider elbow macaroni, rotini, ziti, or even small shells. The key distinction from traditional lasagna is avoiding long, flat noodles, which simplifies both cooking and eating. You’ll utilize the same core flavor components as classic lasagna, just with a different pasta foundation.
- Sauce & Seasoning: A good quality jarred spaghetti sauce is your secret weapon for speed and flavor, as it comes pre-seasoned with traditional Italian herbs. However, don’t hesitate to customize! For those who enjoy a little heat, a pinch of red pepper flakes or chili powder can add a delightful warmth. Additional Italian seasoning, garlic powder, or oregano can further enhance the depth of flavor.
- Cheese: For us, there’s no such thing as too much cheese! Mozzarella is the quintessential choice for its superior melting qualities and classic lasagna appeal. However, feel free to experiment with a blend of mozzarella and provolone, or even a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese for an extra layer of sharp, salty flavor.
- Meat: I personally favor ground beef or spicy ground sausage for a robust and flavorful foundation. The spice from the sausage adds a wonderful dimension to the dish. For a leaner alternative, ground turkey or chicken can be used, sautéed with a similar blend of Italian seasonings. If you’re feeling adventurous and desire a bold, fusion twist, a packet of taco seasoning can be incorporated during the browning stage for a unique Mexican-Italian flavor profile.
- Ricotta Cheese: Galbani ricotta cheese is our top recommendation for its creamy texture and authentic taste. You’ll typically find it in the refrigerated dairy section alongside other cheeses at most supermarkets. If ricotta isn’t available, cottage cheese can serve as a suitable substitute. Additionally, many excellent dairy-free ricotta and cottage cheese alternatives are now on the market for those with specific dietary needs.

The Best Part: No Pre-Boiling Noodles for Our Lazy Lasagna!
That’s the absolute beauty and genius of this recipe – no pre-boiling of noodles is required! If you follow our directions precisely, the pasta cooks directly within the rich spaghetti sauce, perfectly absorbing all its delicious flavors, along with the added water. This truly transforms it into a hands-off, one-pot wonder. All ingredients are added together and cooked simultaneously, ensuring that your pasta achieves a perfect al dente texture without the fuss and extra dishes associated with boiling noodles separately. It’s convenience at its finest!
Elevate Your Instant Pot Lasagna with Ravioli for an Exciting Twist
For an incredibly creative and flavorful variation on this lazy lasagna, consider incorporating small frozen ravioli directly into the pot! This simple addition introduces an entirely new element of texture and taste, as ravioli are typically stuffed with delicious cheese or savory ground meat fillings. The best part is, the cooking timing remains consistent with the pasta, making it an effortlessly elegant swap. We’ve successfully utilized this technique in several other Instant Pot pasta recipes, where small, frozen ravioli are simply submerged into the liquid at the top of the pot and emerge tender and perfectly cooked.
We’ve even adapted this concept to make a delightful lasagna casserole baked in the oven. Another wonderful enhancement we’ve discovered is stirring about half a cup of creamy ricotta cheese into the mix once it’s finished cooking, in addition to placing a generous dollop on top of each serving. This method adds an extra layer of luscious richness and a burst of fresh dairy flavor that is truly fabulous.

As passionate cheese lovers in our home, we firmly believe that a generous helping of shredded mozzarella cheese mixed into the casserole is non-negotiable, with an extra sprinkle on top for that perfect melty finish. When it comes to ricotta, you have a couple of options: you can stir it directly into the hot pasta mixture after cooking, or, as we often do with our Instant Pot Spaghetti, simply add a creamy dollop on top of each individual serving. Both methods are absolutely delicious and add a wonderful dimension of flavor and texture.

Equipment
-
1 pressure cooker
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 lb ground sausage, spicy is tastiest, can use ground beef alternatively
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 jar spaghetti sauce, 24 oz., we use Barilla Traditional
- 2 cup water
- 2 cup pasta, uncooked, we use Barilla penne pasta
- 1 tsp garlic salt
- 1/2 tsp basil
- 2 cup mozzarella cheese, we use Galbani with whole milk
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
Instructions
-
Set your pressure cooker to sauté mode.
-
Add the olive oil, ground sausage (or ground beef), and diced onions to the pot. Cook until the meat is no longer pink. Drain any excess grease and return the pot to your pressure cooker base.
-
Turn the pressure cooker off. This is an important step to prevent the “burn” notification from triggering due to residual heat. Add the garlic salt and basil, and stir them thoroughly with the cooked meat and onions.
-
Spread the seasoned ground meat/sausage mixture out evenly across the bottom of your pot. This layer acts as a crucial barrier to help prevent the noodles from sticking to the bottom.
-
Pour the spaghetti sauce directly on top of the meat layer. Next, pour 2 cups of water into the empty spaghetti sauce jar, shake well to dislodge any remaining sauce, and then pour this mixture into your pot, on top of the spaghetti sauce.
-
Evenly distribute your uncooked pasta noodles as the next layer. Critically, do NOT stir the contents of the pot at this stage! Gently push the noodles down with a spoon to ensure they are fully submerged in the liquid.
-
Secure the lid on your pressure cooker and set it to high pressure for 5 minutes.
-
Once the cooking cycle is complete, perform a quick release of the pressure.
-
Stir in 1.5 cups of mozzarella cheese until it melts and becomes wonderfully gooey. At this point, you can either stir in the ricotta cheese as well, or simply add a dollop of ricotta on top of each serving for a fresh, creamy finish.
