Enjoying the classic British meal made effortlessly in an air fryer.

There’s nothing quite like the comforting crunch of fish and chips, and this air fryer version truly hits the spot. It’s a meal my family and I adore, and now, replicating that restaurant-quality taste at home is a breeze. This versatile recipe allows you to pair your crispy fish with any potato side you prefer – be it classic frozen French fries, hearty tater tots, or chunky potato wedges. The air fryer delivers an unparalleled crispiness without excessive oil, making it a beloved method for a quick, satisfying dinner.

Our journey into air fryer fish began with exploring various air fryer fish recipes. While simple salt and pepper seasoned fish has its charm, the “fried” effect achieved in an air fryer truly elevates the experience. The circulated hot air mimics traditional deep frying, providing that coveted golden-brown exterior and tender, flaky interior with minimal fuss.

Paired with perfectly crispy french fries, this becomes a complete and utterly delightful meal. You can opt for convenience with pre-bagged frozen fries or explore homemade options like our air fryer fish nuggets for a more personalized touch. The choice often depends on how much time you have, but rest assured, both options yield fantastic results.

Essential Air Frying Tips for Optimal Results

Achieving the best air-fried results largely depends on a few key practices. My preferred air fryer models, such as the Cosori or the Ninja Foodi (especially those with the attached lid), consistently deliver excellent performance.

A crucial tip for maximum crispiness is to always preheat your air fryer. Learning how to preheat your air fryer ensures that food starts cooking immediately upon contact with hot air, leading to a superior texture. For consistent success, keep a printable free air fryer cooking time chart handy on your fridge – it’s an invaluable reference for various foods and timings, including your perfect fish and chips.

Mastering Ninja Foodi Fish and Chips (or Any Air Fryer!)

Regardless of the specific brand, be it Ninja Foodi, Cosori, or any other electric air fryer, the principles of cooking remain largely consistent. The magic lies in the circulating hot air, which crisps food to perfection. For our fish component, we often opt for Gorton’s crunchy breaded whole fillets. These are a fantastic choice, being slightly larger than typical fish sticks and offering a satisfying amount of tender fish inside their golden coating.

These larger fillets closely mimic the generous portions you’d expect from a restaurant, offering a truly authentic fish and chips experience at home. You might also find excellent beer-battered versions in the frozen aisle, which are equally delicious when air-fried. Brands like Van de Kamp’s are popular, and even some store brands offer high-quality options. Investing a little more for a premium frozen fish product often pays off in flavor and texture.

When it comes to the potato side, the possibilities are vast. Frozen French fries in the air fryer are a classic, but don’t limit yourself! Tater tots provide a fun, bite-sized alternative, while potato wedges offer a heartier texture (though they may require a minute or two longer to cook). Even larger, chunky hash brown patties from a bag can be transformed into crispy delights in your air fryer, making for a truly customized meal.

Air Frying Battered Fish: Tips and Tricks

Working with pre-battered frozen fish is incredibly straightforward in an air fryer. These products are designed to crisp up beautifully with circulating hot air. However, if you’re keen on battering fresh fish yourself, there’s a slightly different approach. Our Beer Battered Fish Air Fryer recipe guides you through the process, though it’s worth noting that preparing your own wet batter can be a bit messy. For a truly hassle-free experience, pre-breaded or pre-battered frozen options are often the best choice.

While we frequently use specific brands, the market offers a wide array of choices. Many frozen fish products now include air fryer instructions on their packaging, though they typically won’t account for cooking fries simultaneously. Regardless of the brand or type, cooking frozen fish in an air fryer consistently yields perfect results, often surpassing other cooking methods in terms of crispiness and overall quality.

Choosing the Best Fish for Air Fryer Fish and Chips

For traditional fish and chips, common choices include cod, haddock, or pollock, often found in frozen forms like Van de Kamp’s or Gorton’s fish sticks or fillets. When selecting your fish, remember that larger pieces generally mean more succulent fish inside the crispy coating. Consider these alternatives for your air fryer fish dishes:

  1. For a lighter option, try simple air fryer fish seasoned with just salt and pepper, no breading required.
  2. Our air fryer tilapia recipe features a light breadcrumb coating and delicate seasonings.
  3. You can even make delightful air fryer fried shrimp with a similar light breading for a seafood variety.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the other equally important component of this beloved meal: the chips!

Air Fryer French Fries: Your Ultimate Guide

The air fryer is truly a game-changer for making French fries. From thin and crispy shoestring fries to thick steak fries, crinkle cuts, or even curly fries – the options are limitless. While homemade fries are undeniably delicious, they do take more time and effort. For a quick and easy solution that cooks simultaneously with your fish, frozen fries are your best bet. Here are a few fantastic varieties you can perfect in your air fryer:

  • Learn to make perfectly crisp Ninja Foodi French fries, ideal for any occasion.
  • For a chunkier, satisfying bite, air fryer potato wedges are excellent, though they might require an extra minute or two.
  • And for a fun, nostalgic treat, don’t forget you can easily whip up air fryer frozen tater tots!

This time around, I opted for frozen extra crispy Ore-Ida fries, a personal favorite for their consistent crunch and flavor. They cook up beautifully alongside the fish.

Pro Tips for the Best Air Fryer Fish and Chips

To ensure your air fryer fish and chips are nothing short of spectacular, keep these pointers in mind:

  • **Gluten-Free Options:** If you’re looking for gluten-free alternatives, many brands offer breaded fish and fries in the freezer section. Cooking times should remain largely similar; only significant variations in thickness might require minor adjustments.
  • **Minimal Oil:** The beauty of air frying is that it requires very little oil. A light spray of olive oil on your fries helps with browning and allows seasoning to adhere better, delivering a deep-fried texture without the grease. You won’t need to add any oil to the fish itself.
  • **Serving Suggestions:** Serve your fish and chips immediately out of the air fryer for maximum crispiness. Classic accompaniments include a side of zesty tartar sauce, ketchup, or even a spicy fry sauce. For a creative twist, consider using your air-fried fish in delicious air fryer fish tacos!

Optimal Cooking Times: Frozen Fish Fillets and Fries

For larger frozen fish fillets, such as Gorton’s, expect them to cook thoroughly in approximately 10 minutes to reach an internal warmth and achieve a beautifully golden, crispy exterior. When cooking fish and French fries together in the air fryer, the total air frying time will be around 18 minutes. The key is strategic layering and shaking for even cooking.

Present your perfectly cooked fish and chips in a shallow bowl or on a plate, surrounded by an assortment of your favorite dipping sauces, from classic ketchup to a tangy fry sauce. Alternatively, elevate your meal by transforming the crispy fish into delectable air fryer fish tacos.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer Fish and Chips

Can you put wet-battered food in an air fryer?

Generally, wet tempura-like batters are not ideal for air frying as they can drip and create a mess without adhering properly. For best results, use a dry coating, such as breadcrumbs, with a light egg wash to help it stick. However, pre-battered and frozen items (like those used in this recipe) are specifically designed to air fry beautifully and will work perfectly.

Is an air fryer good for cooking fish?

Absolutely! The air fryer is an exceptional tool for cooking all types of fish. Whether you’re making air fryer salmon, delicate white fish, or breaded fried fish, it consistently delivers a wonderfully tender interior and a deliciously crunchy exterior. The circulating hot air ensures even cooking and that satisfying crispiness we all crave.

How do you reheat fish and chips in an air fryer?

The air fryer is your best friend for reheating leftovers! To revive your fish and chips to a satisfying crispiness (though not quite as fresh as newly cooked), preheat your air fryer to 360°F (180°C). Place your leftover fish and chips in the basket and cook for approximately 3-5 minutes, or until thoroughly heated and re-crisped.

For this recipe, I initially crisped the French fries before adding the frozen fish. To ensure optimal airflow and prevent the fish from getting soggy, I used a flat trivet to separate the two layers. A small piece of parchment paper can also serve this purpose effectively, preventing the fish from resting directly on the fries.
