Copycat The Habit Fried Green Beans
If you love The Habit fried green beans you'll love this copycat recipe you can make at home. Great vegetable side dish that our kids love and we do too. Deep fried or you can make our version of fried green beans air fryer style.

So we're always looking to add a new and tasty vegetable side dish to our dinners. So far it has worked since we went from children liking NO veggies to now they sometimes prefer them over their meat dish. These tempura fried green beans are now they're favorites.
Deep Fried Green Beans
We started with tempura zucchini chips which they love. We moved on to fried green beans which are now top of their list. We LOVE The Habit's green beans so we made a copycat version here, hope you like them.
Now you don't have to have a deep fryer to make these. A pan with a few inches of oil will work as well. The tip to getting them crunchy is to wait until the oil is nice and hot first. Never submerge food until it is more than 325 degrees so it doesn't soak it up in the process.

Copycat The Habit Fried Green Beans
It isn't often that we go out to eat but when we do we gravitate toward these fried green beans at The Habit. We figured there had to be a way to create a recipe so we could make them at home for dinner too. It was quite easy.
Of course it isn't exactly the same but we since we can cook them with fresh green beans they come out a bit more turgid and fresh than in the restaurant which is a win. Here is the recipe for tempura batter you will need.

Tempura Green Beans
You'll need vegetable oil on the list too. If you are deep frying them you'll need more than adding that into a pot or cast iron pan. Either way works great so long as they're submerged.
Ingredients
- Flour is the base of the batter
- Cold wateryou want it like quite cold
- Egg should be room temperature
- Fresh green beans trimmed on the ends and cut in half
- Garlic powder adds flavor
- Seasoned salt like Lawrys we love
The base is 3 main items. From there add as many seasonings as you would like to the batter in order to jazz it up. From there add more seasonings before serving.
There is no need to bring a pot of water to boil and blanch them ahead of time. You can jump to recipe card below but here is a quick rundown
Green Beans Deep Fried Recipe
- Heat your vegetable or peanut oil until hot. You can test if it's ready by putting one drop of your batter inside. If it fries immediately then it is ready. Sinking to the bottom means you need more time.
- Mix together your flour, cold ice water, and egg whites in a bowl until smooth with a whisk.
- Wash and cut off ends of green beans.
- Lay them all out on paper towels and roll up to dry outsides off so batter will stick.
- when choosing a batch, bright green and firm are best, we don't like using from frozen
- Lay them all out on paper towels and roll up to dry outsides off so batter will stick.
- Use a fork and dip green beans into batter and put in oil when hot, turn over when lightly browned. Put on paper towels to absorb excess oil when done.
- Season and serve with a little dish of ranch dressing for dipping.
Fried Green Beans without bread crumbs
The whole process of making Habit burger grill green beans are quite simple. Using fresh vegetables is best and you'll want to trim them as you would if you made sheet pan green beans in the oven. We use the same method when making air fryer green beans as well but that has to be a dry bread crumbs sort of coating instead of wet.
Make sure they're dry on the outside so the batter sticks well and doesn't slide off. Making sure your oil is nice and hot before submerging will ensure they come out crispy like you want them.
Other tempura recipes you'll love
Next you can try french fries with potatoes or coat any veggies with the same batter like our tempura mushrooms too OR use for dessert like we did with banana tempura bites.
Tips
We will admit, these don't save well. We would recommend only making what you think you will eat that evening. Best when served immediately so they are warm and crispy. As they sit they'll soften up which isn't as appetizing, freshly made is the only way to go so time it accordingly.
It is nice to mix it up at dinner time, and if you want a fun way to serve them at dinner or at a party these basket/cones are fantastic especially when you have kids.
Believe us when we say sometimes it takes time getting kids to eat vegetables. But trying new ones, and new ways of cooking them helps to enhance the love.
