This recipe is super flexible too as you can make it any brand of pressure cooker or Ninja Foodi as long as it is electric with a high pressure function. throw them in with some water and seasonings and bam you're ready to cook!

Pressure Cooker Black Beans 2

Let's start with the fact that there is NO pre soaking required when cooking dry beans in an Instant Pot. You can get them tender and the solid texture in no time. Then enjoy as a side dish or throw them into our Instant Pot Mexican casserole and enjoy.

Ingredient notes

Here's where we start. Grab a bag of dry black beans at the grocery store and rinse them off. Why? Because there tends to be debris on them and every once and a while a pebble. You don't want to chomp down on that! Whether you are making slow cooker black beansor the faster method like this you want to wash them first.

We like to add some garlic (minced) and diced onions into the mix which adds a lot of flavor and a bit more texture when done too.

As for the seasonings we add some cumin as well as table salt but that is up to you if you want more than that. You can certainly include some heat with chili powder, red pepper flakes and/or dry sriracha.

Dry Beans to Water Ratio

With any type you choose you will want to cover the top and then some. First off you never want to pass the no fill line inside the pot, ever. You are going to need to cover them with water PLUS 3 inches above that. Then you will be good to go. You need enough water or chicken broth for them to absorb and plump up. Add seasonings too at this time.

How Long to Cook Dry Black Beans in Instant Pot

From start to finish it will take under an hour total. Half of the time is pressure cooking + it is necessary to naturally release the steam at the end so that lengthens the overall timing. Then enjoy as is or make Instant Pot black beans and rice with them.

How do you know when black beans are done?

A well cooked bean should be creamy on the inside with skin that is intact, not crushed or broken. The best way to tell if a bean is cooked is to taste it really. Some like it more tender than others but you definitely don't want it hard or crumbly on the inside.

Can you make black refried beans when done?

If you would like to make these smoother you can use a potato masher right in the pot. Then slowly add more chicken broth if you want them smoother and not as thick. Add gradually because once they are thinned you can't thicken back up.
