It’s a remarkably easy and budget-friendly snack that promises to be a crowd-pleaser, rivaling even our popular air fryer pigs in a blanket for sheer simplicity and deliciousness.

The sheer joy of indulging in pull-apart pigs in a blanket made with pizza dough is undeniable! This recipe is incredibly straightforward, so much so that even young children can actively participate in wrapping the mini sausages. By utilizing either refrigerated pizza or biscuit dough and bite-sized smokies, you set the stage for an engaging and delicious cooking experience. A final sprinkle of cheese before serving, or an array of your favorite dipping sauces, elevates this humble snack into an unforgettable treat. Its interactive nature makes it a fantastic addition to any social gathering, encouraging guests to mingle and enjoy.
The Irresistible Appeal of Lil’ Smokies Pigs in a Blanket
If the thought of savory sausages encased in a warm, soft blanket of dough makes your mouth water, then these lil’ smokies pigs in a blanket are guaranteed to be an instant favorite. While the recipe is versatile enough to accommodate various types of wieners – you could even cut larger hot dogs into thirds – lil’ smokies hold a special place. Their robust flavor and slightly thicker outer skin provide a satisfying texture and a more pronounced taste that stands out beautifully against the dough. This makes them an excellent choice for a snack where every bite delivers a burst of flavor.
For the dough, many prefer the reliability of Pillsbury refrigerated pizza dough. Its consistent thickness and ease of handling make it a go-to option. Alternatively, flattened and thinly sliced refrigerated biscuit dough can offer a pleasant variation, baking up with a slightly different, often flakier texture. Regardless of your chosen dough, the baking time will remain relatively consistent, aiming for that perfect golden-brown crust and a thoroughly cooked interior. Choosing the Perfect Dough for Your Pigs in a Blanket
The adaptability of the pigs in a blanket recipe truly shines when considering the various dough options available. Each type of dough brings its own unique characteristics, affecting both the texture and flavor of the final product. However, a universal rule applies: maintaining consistent dough thickness is paramount for even baking, ensuring no unpleasant surprises of raw dough beneath a golden exterior. Whether you opt for a classic or an alternative, the goal is always a perfectly cooked, delicious blanket for your “pigs.”
Pigs in a Blanket with Pizza Dough: For a Hearty Crust
Refrigerated pizza dough stands out as a top contender for pull-apart pigs in a blanket. Its innate thinness and rectangular shape are incredibly convenient, allowing you to unroll it and swiftly slice even strips with a pizza cutter. This method is incredibly time-efficient, simplifying the wrapping process for each mini sausage. Pizza dough bakes into a delightful texture that’s both slightly chewy and wonderfully crisp, creating a robust and satisfying casing for the savory smokies. Its neutral flavor profile also ensures that the richness of the sausages and any added seasonings are the true stars of the show.
Making Pigs in a Blanket with Biscuits: For a Softer Bite
For those who prefer a softer, more bread-like texture, refrigerated biscuit dough offers an excellent alternative. To use biscuit dough, you’ll need to flatten each biscuit disc before slicing it into strips. While this requires a bit more effort to achieve uniform thickness, the reward is a tender, buttery crust that beautifully complements the sausages. This method is particularly forgiving, and in moments of culinary improvisation, I’ve successfully used flattened and defrosted frozen rolls, proving that resourcefulness can lead to equally delicious results!
Crescent Rolls for Light and Flaky Pigs in a Blanket
Indeed, crescent rolls are another popular option for making pigs in a blanket, offering a distinct and delicious outcome. When using crescent dough, anticipate a much flakier, lighter, and more buttery crust compared to the denser textures of pizza or biscuit dough. This unique texture is highly desirable for many, but it also means a significantly shorter baking time. It’s crucial to stay vigilant and monitor them closely to prevent over-browning or burning. To prepare, simply unroll the crescent dough sheet, gently press any perforations together if necessary to form a single sheet, and then slice it into strips of adequate width to snugly wrap around your sausages.

Key Ingredients for Your Succulent Sausage Roll Ring
Crafting this delightful appetizer requires only a handful of readily available ingredients, allowing for quick preparation without compromising on flavor. The simplicity of the ingredient list means you can focus on the fun of assembly and the joy of serving. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll need to create your impressive sausage roll ring:
- Package of Lil’ Smokies: These mini sausages are the heart of the dish, providing savory flavor and the perfect bite-sized form. You can also use other cocktail sausages or cut hot dogs if preferred.
- Refrigerated Pizza Dough Roll: This is your primary “blanket.” Its consistent texture and ease of use make it ideal for wrapping. One roll is usually sufficient, but having a spare is always a good idea.
- Melted Butter: Essential for adding rich flavor and ensuring the dough bakes to a beautiful golden-brown. It also acts as a binder for your seasonings.
- Garlic Powder: A foundational seasoning that infuses the dough with an aromatic, savory depth, complementing the smokies beautifully.
- Optional Flavor Enhancements: Feel free to customize! A sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning on top adds fantastic texture and a burst of savory flavor. For an Italian flair, a dash of Italian seasoning works wonders. If you enjoy a touch of heat, red pepper flakes can be added to the butter mixture or sprinkled over the top.
With these basic components, you’re well on your way to creating an appetizer that’s both easy to make and incredibly satisfying.
Essential Equipment for a Perfect Pull-Apart Ring
While the recipe itself is straightforward, having the right kitchen tools can significantly enhance your experience and the presentation of your pull-apart pigs in a blanket. Thoughtful equipment choices ensure even baking and effortless serving.
For the best and most aesthetically pleasing result, a 9-inch round cake pan is highly recommended. It helps shape the wrapped sausages into a beautiful, cohesive ring that’s easy to pull apart. If a round pan isn’t available, a square springform pan or even a sturdy oven-safe dish can be used, though the visual presentation will differ. To ensure smooth removal of the entire baked ring from the pan and easy transfer to your serving platter, consider lining your pan with 9-inch parchment paper sheets, especially those equipped with convenient side handles.
Additionally, you’ll need a small wad of aluminum foil. This is placed in the center of the pan before arranging the pigs in a blanket. Once baking is complete and the foil is removed, it leaves a perfect circular cavity in the middle of your appetizer ring. This space is ideal for nestling a small ramekin filled with your favorite dipping sauce, such as BBQ sauce, ketchup, honey mustard, or a spicy mayo, creating a stunning centerpiece for your snack.
Expert Tips for Flawless Pigs in a Blanket
To ensure your pull-apart pigs in a blanket are nothing short of perfection, consider these invaluable tips. They address common challenges and help you achieve the ideal texture and temperature for your appetizer, making you a true kitchen hero.
How to Prevent Soggy Pigs in a Blanket
One of the most common concerns when baking pigs in a blanket is preventing the dough from becoming soggy. The key lies in moisture control. Before you wrap your lil’ smokies or other cocktail sausages, it is absolutely essential to blot them thoroughly with paper towels. Any residual moisture on the surface of the sausages can create steam during baking, which will prevent the dough from crisping up properly and instead lead to a soft, undesirable texture. By ensuring the smokies are dry, the dough can adhere better and bake to a beautiful, crispy finish.
Keeping Pigs in a Blanket Warm for a Party
Timing is everything when serving appetizers at a party. To ensure your pigs in a blanket are fresh and warm, avoid pouring the butter mixture over them until just before they go into the oven. This prevents the dough from softening prematurely. Ideally, plan your baking time so they come out of the oven right as your guests are arriving or as the party transitions into the food stage. If you need to keep them warm for a short period, you can switch off the oven and place them back inside on a “warm” setting, or set the oven to its lowest temperature (around 225°F or 107°C) and briefly return them to the oven. However, be cautious not to leave them in for too long, as prolonged exposure to heat can dry out the dough and the sausages. For longer warming periods, a chafing dish or a slow cooker on the “warm” setting can also be effective, just ensure adequate air circulation to prevent steaming.

Perfect Pairings: Serving Suggestions and Dipping Sauces
The versatility of pull-apart pigs in a blanket extends to how they can be served, making them a fantastic option for virtually any occasion. They are a perfectly easy appetizer for high-energy game days, a comforting snack on a lazy rainy weekend, or a delightful addition to casual summertime get-togethers. While classic dipping options like ketchup and mustard are always a hit, don’t hesitate to get creative with your sauce selection to truly elevate the experience.
Consider offering a zesty Bang Bang Shrimp sauce for an unexpected and flavorful twist, a creamy homemade fry sauce, or perhaps a savory mustard pretzel dip for an extra layer of gourmet appeal. A tangy barbecue sauce, a sweet and spicy chili sauce, or even a simple ranch dressing can also be excellent complements. For a more substantial offering, pair these delectable bites with a fresh garden salad, some crisp coleslaw, or even a bowl of warm chili, transforming them from a simple snack into a satisfying and fun meal. Their shareable nature makes them an instant hit, encouraging conversation and culinary enjoyment.

How to Make Pull Apart Pigs in a Blanket in the Oven: Step-by-Step Guide
Creating these delightful pull-apart pigs in a blanket is incredibly simple and surprisingly quick. From start to finish, including preheating, preparation, and baking, you can have this impressive appetizer ready in under 30 minutes. Below is a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to ensure your success. You’ll also find a simplified printable recipe card at the bottom of this article for your convenience.
- Step 1: Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray a 9-inch round cake pan with non-stick cooking spray, ensuring good coverage to prevent any sticking.
- Step 2: Unroll and Slice Dough. Open your package of refrigerated pizza dough. Carefully unroll it onto a lightly floured surface or a non-stick cutting board. Using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, slice the dough into pieces approximately 1×2 inches. Uniformity in size helps with even baking and presentation.
- Step 3: Prepare the Smokies. Lay your lil’ smokies or cocktail sausages on several layers of paper towels. Gently roll them around to absorb any excess moisture from their surface. This is a crucial step for achieving a crispy dough.
- Step 4: Wrap the Sausages. Take one dough strip and one smokie. Carefully wrap the dough around the smokie, ensuring the ends of the dough are securely sealed to prevent them from unraveling during baking.
- Step 5: Arrange in Pan. Place each wrapped pig in a blanket upright in the prepared cake pan. Begin at the outer rim of the pan and work your way inward, arranging them in concentric circles. Be mindful not to overcrowd the pan, as the dough will expand as it bakes. Leave a small, consistent gap between each piece.
- Step 6: Create a Center Well. After arranging about 2-3 rows (which typically uses one package of wieners), there will likely be an empty space in the center. Wad up a piece of aluminum foil and place it firmly in this central space. This prevents the inner ring of pigs in a blanket from leaning over and creates a perfect cavity for your dipping sauce later.
- Step 7: Prepare the Butter Glaze. In a small, microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter. Stir in the garlic powder. If desired, this is also the time to mix in other dry seasonings like everything bagel seasoning, Italian seasoning, or red pepper flakes for an extra flavor kick.
- Step 8: Drizzle and Bake. Evenly pour or brush the melted butter and seasoning mixture over the tops of all the wrapped sausages in the cake pan. Place the pan into the preheated oven.
- Step 9: Monitor Baking. Bake for approximately 30 minutes at 375°F (190°C). After 30 minutes, check for doneness: the dough should be golden brown and feel firm, no longer sticky. If it requires more time, return it to the oven for an additional 5 minutes, then check again.
- Step 10: Cool, Transfer, and Serve. Once baked to perfection, carefully remove the pan from the oven and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes. If you wish to transfer the entire ring to a serving plate, place a sturdy plate on top of the cake pan, gently flip it over, then place another plate on the new bottom and flip it upright again. Remove the aluminum foil from the center, place a small dish with your favorite dip into the well, and serve your delicious pull-apart pigs in a blanket immediately!

Frequently Asked Questions About Pigs in a Blanket
“Pigs in a blanket” is a common term for a popular appetizer where small sausages, often cocktail wieners or miniature hot dogs, are wrapped in a layer of dough and then baked, fried, or air-fried until the dough is golden and cooked through. The name humorously describes the “pig” (sausage) nestled snugly in its “blanket” (dough).
Absolutely! Crescent rolls are a fantastic and very common choice for making pigs in a blanket. They produce a wonderfully flaky, buttery, and lighter crust compared to heartier doughs like pizza or biscuit dough. However, due to their thinner nature, crescent rolls bake faster, so it’s essential to keep a close eye on them to prevent over-browning. Simply unroll the crescent dough sheet, press the seams together if needed, and slice it into strips to wrap around your sausages.
To ensure a crispy, non-soggy outcome, the most critical step is to thoroughly pat your lil’ smokies or cocktail sausages dry with paper towels before wrapping them in dough. Any surface moisture on the sausages can create steam during baking, which will prevent the dough from crisping up and lead to a soggy texture. Additionally, avoid overcrowding your baking pan, as this can also trap steam and hinder proper browning.
Yes, you can easily prepare them in advance! Assemble the wrapped pigs in a blanket and arrange them in your baking pan (without the butter mixture). Cover the pan loosely with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Just before you’re ready to bake, drizzle them with the melted butter and garlic mixture, then follow the baking instructions. This allows you to serve fresh, hot appetizers without the last-minute rush.
The flavor possibilities are endless! Beyond garlic powder, you can incorporate a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese, a pinch of dried Italian herbs like oregano or basil, or a dash of onion powder into your butter mixture. For a savory crunch and gourmet appeal, try sprinkling everything bagel seasoning over the tops of the wrapped dough before baking. If you enjoy a bit of heat, a small amount of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes can be added to the butter or sprinkled on top.
