How Long to Cook Cube Steak in Slow Cooker

The timing depends on the thickness of your meat but typically in a thick gravy sauce you are looking at about 6 hours. There isn't much you need to do beyond the initial prep in the morning which is nice. You can thicken the sauce at the end more if you like but that is quick.

What is cube steak made of?

It is a cut of beef, usually top round or top sirloin. It's tenderized and flattened by pounding with a meat tenderizer as you see here. You can also use an electric tenderizer. The name refers to the shape of the indentations left by that process, called cubing. We've found it already pound out in the grocery store, but it takes a few minutes to do yourself at home.

Either way it comes out incredibly tender, especially if you make it in your slow cooker. We bet once you too try it low and slow smothered in gravy you may never go back to any other method.

Ingredient notes

Cube steak is of course the main star of the show. It is usually made of slices of top round or top sirloin pounded by a meat mallet or run thru a machine to tenderize with those little divots on the top and bottom of each piece.

Do you wash cube steak before cooking?

no! Do not rinse your raw beef, pork, lamb, chicken, turkey, or veal before cooking. Now you could use other meats to make this as well. We have done this same thing to make Pork Cube Steak as well with pounded out boneless chops.

You will want a can of cream of mushroom soup and a can of cream of chicken soup, or another mushroom can works too if you prefer that only.

We do like to dice or slice a white or yellow Onion and throw it in there for flavor and texture but it is optional as well as including your dry French onion soup mix packet. Some use a gravy packet instead but we feel this has more flavor

You will need some liquid to make this, the best is Beef broth or mix beef bouillon with water to make broth vs. water which offers no flavor.

Cornstarch to thicken sauce. You could slice mushrooms in half and add at the end too.

Unlike our steak in the Instant Potthis meat is so tender when it's done that you can cut it with the side of your fork! As for the seasonings you can add as many or few as you wish. We tend to under-season while cooking, and add to the top once it's done.

How do you tenderize cube steak?

If you want to tenderize and make cubed steak at home you'll need a metal meat tenderizer like we used. Lay your meat on a cutting board and start pounding away to flatten and poke holes in it so it becomes easier to chew when done. If you don't have one of those you can use the back of a cast iron pan and then use a fork to poke on both sides.

Is Minute steak and cube steak the same thing?

While cube steak is sometimes referred to as minute steak, the latter is actually a different cut of meat. Cube steak is cut from the round steak or chuck steak and then tenderized, while Minute steak is thinly cut from the sirloin or round steak and pounded as well. Sometimes people refer to them as the same, and honestly they are quite similar. Take a peek at our cube steak and gravy recipe inside our Crockpot here.
