Cooking Pizza Pasta in Your Pressure Cooker
The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and versatility, thanks to the magic of the pressure cooker. To streamline the process, we often opt for a convenient jar of spaghetti sauce. However, if you have a cherished homemade spaghetti sauce recipe, feel free to use that instead for an extra touch of personalized flavor. Think of this dish as your favorite Instant Pot pizza, reimagined in a comforting pasta form! This recipe is incredibly adaptable and works wonderfully in various models, whether you’re using an Instant Pot, a Ninja Foodi, or a Crockpot Express. We believe in culinary inclusivity, so no matter your brand of pressure cooker, you’re good to go!
For those who cherish both the cheesy goodness of pizza and the hearty satisfaction of pasta, this dish is an absolute must-try for your pressure cooker repertoire. It’s not only remarkably quick to prepare, but also incredibly inexpensive, making it a perfect solution for budget-friendly weeknight meals. We’ve yet to encounter anyone who didn’t find this dish utterly delicious. It masterfully combines all the beloved flavors of pizza, allowing you to load it up with any and all the toppings you typically crave on your favorite “pie” – but in a wonderfully unconventional way.
Imagine classic pepperoni and savory mushrooms, perhaps enhanced with a sprinkle of sliced black olives. The possibilities truly are endless. If you’re a fan of the sweet and savory blend of Hawaiian pizza, you could easily dice up some Canadian bacon or ham and add a handful of pineapple tidbits to achieve that delightful flavor profile, typically reserved for a crust.
If you’ve historically only enjoyed these incredible flavor combinations on a flat, edible surface, it’s time to expand your culinary horizons! We’ve also successfully incorporated this noodle-based approach into other slow-cooked delights, like our slow cooker pizza casserole, which is equally divine.

Furthermore, we’ve explored a more traditional yet equally fun method with our Crockpot pizza instructions, demonstrating that baking delicious meals doesn’t exclusively require an oven. It’s a fantastic way to involve kids in the cooking process and show them the versatility of kitchen appliances.
Essential Ingredients for Instant Pot Pizza Pasta
Crafting this delightful Instant Pot pizza pasta requires a simple list of ingredients, most of which you likely already have on hand or can easily find at any grocery store. The beauty of this dish is its flexibility, allowing you to adapt it to your family’s preferences.
- Noodles: A 1 lb box of your favorite small- to medium-sized pasta works perfectly. Rotini is an excellent choice due to its spiral shape, which clings beautifully to the sauce, but ziti, penne, or rigatoni are also fantastic options.
- For those with dietary restrictions, gluten-free noodles can absolutely be used. Just be aware that their cooking times might need slight adjustment, often requiring a minute or two less pressure cooking to achieve the desired texture.
- A Jar of Sauce: A 24 oz jar of your preferred pizza or spaghetti sauce forms the flavorful base. For an even more authentic taste, consider our homemade Instant Pot spaghetti sauce.
- Water or Broth: Approximately 2 2/3 cups of water or vegetable broth are needed to properly cook the noodles and ensure the sauce doesn’t become too thick. Broth will add an extra layer of savory depth.
- Pepperoni: About 10 slices, cut in half, provide that classic pizza flavor. Alternatively, precooked ground sausage or ground beef can be used for a heartier meal.
- Mozzarella Cheese: 1 1/2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese are essential for that irresistible gooey, melted topping. It’s truly the best cheese for a pizza-inspired dish.
- Your Favorite Toppings: This is where the customization shines! Include optional ingredients like 6 quartered mushrooms and 1/2 cup of sliced black olives, or any other pizza topping you desire.
- Seasonings: Don’t forget the flavor enhancers! 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper, 1 tsp dried basil, 1 tsp dried parsley, and 1/2 tsp garlic powder will bring out the authentic Italian notes.
- Olive Oil: A teaspoon of olive oil not only adds flavor but also helps prevent the pasta from sticking.
Elevate Your Dish: What are the Best Pizza Pasta Toppings?
One of the most exciting aspects of making Instant Pot pizza pasta is the freedom to customize it with your favorite toppings. Think of your pressure cooker as a canvas for your culinary creativity! Here’s a comprehensive list of popular and delicious toppings to inspire your next meal:
- Pepperoni: A timeless classic that adds a delightful savory, slightly spicy kick.
- Mushrooms: Fresh or canned, sliced mushrooms provide an earthy depth.
- Onions: Diced yellow or red onions add a sharp, pungent flavor that mellows beautifully during cooking.
- Sausage: Whether it’s Italian sausage, breakfast sausage, or a mild ground pork, sausage is a fantastic addition.
- Tip: For best results, brown your ground sausage in the Instant Pot on the “Sauté” setting with a drizzle of olive oil before adding the other ingredients. This enhances its flavor and texture.
- Crumbled Bacon: Crispy bacon bits lend a smoky, salty punch that complements the rich sauce.
- Sliced Black Olives: A briny, savory topping that adds a pop of color and flavor.
- Green Peppers: A favorite for many, green bell peppers add a fresh, slightly bitter note.
- Tip: If you love your green peppers tender, include them in with your uncooked noodles at the beginning of the pressure cooking cycle so they soften perfectly.
- Other great options: Consider adding diced ham, cooked ground beef, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, or even a pinch of red pepper flakes for a spicier version.

Mastering Pasta Cooking Times in a Pressure Cooker
One of the most common questions about pressure cooking pasta revolves around timing. The duration significantly depends on whether you’re cooking pasta solely in water or incorporating it directly into a sauce with other ingredients. When we prepare Instant Pot pasta recipes, our preferred method is always to cook the uncooked noodles directly within a flavorful sauce, complemented by a bit of additional liquid. This technique is a game-changer for flavor, as the pasta actively soaks up all the delicious notes from your spaghetti or alfredo sauce, resulting in a much richer and more integrated taste compared to simply boiling pasta in water on your stovetop.
For the majority of small- to medium-sized noodles, such as rotini, penne, or ziti, achieving a perfectly tender texture typically requires about 4-5 minutes of high-pressure cooking. If your recipe includes meat or longer noodles, like in our Instant Pot spaghetti, a slightly longer cooking time of 8-9 minutes is generally recommended to ensure everything cooks through evenly.
Of course, if your preference leans towards al dente pasta – firm to the bite – we recommend decreasing the pressure cooking time by about one minute. For delicate egg noodles, often used in dishes like our Instant Pot tuna casserole, a mere 3 minutes of pressure cooking is sufficient, followed by a quick pressure release to prevent overcooking. Always remember to consider the natural release time, as pasta continues to cook during this period.

How to Make Instant Pot Pizza Pasta: A Step-by-Step Guide
Making this delicious pizza pasta in your Instant Pot is incredibly straightforward. Follow these steps for a satisfying meal that comes together quickly.
- Prepare Meat (Optional): If you plan to add ground sausage or ground beef, set your Instant Pot to the “Sauté” setting with a tablespoon of olive oil. Cook the meat until it’s no longer pink, breaking it up as it cooks. Once done, turn the pot off, leaving the cooked meat at the bottom.
- Layer the First Sauce: Pour approximately three-quarters of your pizza or spaghetti sauce into the pot, directly over the meat if used. Add all your Italian seasonings (salt, pepper, basil, parsley, garlic powder) and a bit of olive oil. Give it a gentle stir to combine the seasonings with the sauce.
- Add Noodles and Remaining Sauce: Evenly sprinkle your uncooked noodles into the pot. Crucially, DO NOT stir the noodles into the sauce at this stage. Then, pour the remaining quarter of the sauce evenly over the noodles.
- Introduce Liquid: Add water or broth into your empty sauce jar, secure the lid, and shake vigorously to dislodge any lingering sauce. Pour this flavorful liquid directly over the noodles. Again, DO NOT stir after adding the liquid.
- Submerge Noodles Gently: Carefully and gently submerge the noodles into the liquid using a spoon or spatula. Ensure they are mostly covered by the liquid but avoid pushing them firmly to the bottom of the pot. This is vital to prevent the dreaded “burn notice” that can occur if pasta settles directly on the bottom.
- Pressure Cook: Secure the lid on your Instant Pot and ensure the steam release valve is set to the “Sealing” position. Select “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” (High Pressure) and set the cook time for 4 minutes.
- Release Pressure: Once the cooking cycle is complete, allow for a 1-minute natural pressure release. This short natural release helps prevent foaming and ensures even cooking. After 1 minute, manually switch the steam release valve to the “Venting” position for a quick release of any remaining pressure.
- Final Stir and Toppings: Carefully remove the lid. Stir the contents of the pot thoroughly to combine the sauce and noodles. Now, stir in your shredded mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, olives, and any other desired pizza toppings. Stir until the cheese is beautifully melted and all ingredients are warmed through.
- Serve and Enjoy: Ladle your delicious Instant Pot pizza pasta into bowls. For an extra touch of indulgence, serve with more shredded cheese on top and perhaps a side of crusty bread.
For those looking for a lighter, low-carb alternative, you can adapt the flavors by following our spaghetti squash pizza recipe. Remember, you have the flexibility to add these wonderful pizza toppings at different stages. While we recommend stirring them in at the end for fresh flavor and texture, you can also add certain heartier toppings (like pepperoni) before pressure cooking if you prefer them steamed and fully integrated.

Tips for Preventing Pasta from Sticking in Your Pressure Cooker
Achieving perfectly cooked, non-sticky pasta in your Instant Pot is entirely possible with a few simple tricks. Here’s how to ensure your pizza pasta turns out just right:
- Add Olive Oil: Incorporating a teaspoon of olive oil into your cooking liquid (water, broth, and sauce mixture) is key. The oil creates a subtle barrier, helping to prevent the pasta strands from clumping together.
- Proper Liquid Ratio: Ensure you have enough liquid to cover the pasta adequately but not so much that the sauce becomes watery. The ratio provided in this recipe is designed to work perfectly.
- “No Stir” Rule (Initial Cook): As mentioned in the instructions, resist the urge to stir the noodles into the sauce before pressure cooking. Layering helps prevent sticking and the dreaded “burn” notice.
- Gently Submerge: After adding all ingredients, gently submerge the noodles so they are just under the liquid, but avoid pressing them firmly to the bottom. This allows for even cooking without sticking.
When properly cooked with these tips, your pasta shouldn’t stick. The olive oil will actually help coat the noodles and prevent the sauce from sticking excessively to the pot as well.
If you prefer an alternative method, you can also cook the noodles separately first. This second method involves cooking your pasta with just water (enough to cover it well) for about 3 minutes in the Instant Pot, followed by a quick release. Then, you can add your sauce and other ingredients at the end, warm everything through, and serve. For us, this pressure cooking method for pasta has been a true game-changer, making stovetop boiling a thing of the past. We’ve even perfected making Instant Pot Kraft macaroni and cheese with absolutely no draining required!
How to Store and Reheat Leftover Instant Pot Pizza Pasta
It’s always a treat to have leftovers of this delicious Instant Pot pizza pasta! To ensure your leftovers remain fresh and flavorful, proper storage is essential.
Once the meal has cooled sufficiently, transfer it from the Instant Pot liner to a suitable storage container. To maximize the shelf life of cooked pasta and maintain its quality, refrigerate it promptly in shallow, airtight containers or resealable plastic bags. When stored correctly, your cooked Instant Pot pizza pasta will typically last for 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator, making it perfect for convenient lunches or quick dinners throughout the week. For reheating, a microwave works well, or you can gently warm it on the stovetop with a splash of water or broth to loosen the sauce.

Equipment
- 1 pressure cooker
Ingredients
- 1 lb noodles (we use ziti or rigatoni)
- 2 2/3 c water or broth
- 1 1/2 c mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 24 oz spaghetti sauce
- 10 pepperoni, cut in half
- 6 mushrooms, quartered (optional)
- 1/2 c olives, sliced, black (optional)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp basil
- 1 tsp parsley
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp olive oil
Instructions
- Pour 3/4 of your spaghetti sauce into your pot. Add olive oil and seasonings (salt, pepper, basil, parsley, garlic powder), and stir briefly to combine.
- Evenly dump in your uncooked noodles. DO NOT stir or submerge them deeply. Pour the remaining spaghetti sauce on top of the noodles. Then, pour water or broth into your empty spaghetti sauce bottle, put the top on, and shake vigorously to get out any remaining sauce. Pour this liquid over the uncooked noodles.
- GENTLY submerge the noodles just so they are mostly under the liquid, but avoid pushing them to the very bottom of the pot. (You can add pepperoni on top now if you want them hot and steamed, or add at the very end).
- Close the lid and ensure the steam valve is set to “Sealing.” Set your pressure cooker to High Pressure for a 4-minute cook time.
- After cooking, allow for a 1-minute natural release, then perform a quick release of the remaining steam.
- Lift the lid carefully and stir the contents of the pot thoroughly. Add any and all desired pizza toppings, including the shredded cheese, into the pot and stir until everything is melted and warmed through inside the cooked sauce and noodles.
- Serve immediately with extra Parmesan cheese or additional mozzarella cheese on top for an extra cheesy finish.
