How to save money on groceries

  • Organize your coupons. You will never find what you're looking for and it will take Forever in the store if you don't have your coupons organized in some way. We like to organize them by aisle, saves us a bunch of time!

We have used many coupon organizers. The one we like best and use today is a simple one that is less than $10 and you can name each pouch whatever you'd like.

Saving Money at the Grocery Store

  • Don't be picky. What we mean by this is you cannot be brand specific if you want to coupon well. Of course there are some exceptions to this rule. We buy organic milk, so we could disregard a milk coupon if it didn't enable us to buy an organic version because that is important to us….but that is it!
    • You can't be brand loyal if you want to save as much as possible in the grocery store. For example, this Finish dishwashing detergent gel pacs.

We have been couponing for so long that we could care less what brand we buy. This one was a real winner at $1.34/ea. compared to $5.49 when it's not on sale.

Always clip BOGO coupons. Buy one get on free (BOGO) coupons are awesome! Many times we wait until the item we have to buy is on sale. Then use our coupon so we get an even better deal, like this BOGO deal above!

How Can we Drastically Lower our Grocery Bill

  • We bought the bag of Craisins on sale for $2 and got a 6 pack of boxed Craisins (like raisin boxes for lunches) for free…..so we paid $1 a piece for our goodies when normally they were each $2.99!
  • Wait until the item is on sale. That is right! Yes you have a coupon, but if you want to coupon well you need to wait until the item you have a coupon for is on sale AND you have a coupon!

Once you've organized your coupons in a pouch like we shared above, it isn't a big deal to put it back. Check the next time you shop to see if it is on sale that day.

  • Order multiple papers. Yes. Keep an eye out for a great deal on your local Sunday paper that has coupons on it (we found one here and it comes out periodically for a year's subscription for $10, then we get a few).

Then, clip the ones you want and stock up on. Especially things that will last a long time and/or you use so often they would never expire are good. We have another post on simple stockpiling tips you can read here.

  • Detergent, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and diapers are a few things you should NEVER pay full price for because there are ALWAYS coupons for these.
    • If you can't find any in your Sunday paper you can always find some by printing coupons online on sites like this. That's an easy way to get you started.

If you're a beginner start slowly.

Don't get overwhelmed by it all. Take a few tips like these and run with them until you're ready to delve in some more. If you liked this one you can read further on our post for coupon tips for beginners
